Tomato Price Rises By 125% – Report

According to reports, the prices of tomatoes have increased by 125 percent between the period of March and April.

It was recorded that tomato, which use to sell for N8000 per basket now sells at N18,000 an upsurge of 125 per cent. As at last year and January this year tomatoes was selling for N3000, and later rose to N8000- a 62 per cent increase.

Traders, who spoke with one of the leading news portal in Nigeria, said that the increase in price was as a result of change in season.  According to some, some of the agricultural produce is now expensive because they are out of season while others b lamed the rain for the rise in the price of tomatoes.

“We are expecting Yoruba tomato from now and may be the prices will change a little. We are not happy with the increase in prices of tomatoes because when we buy it expensive we can lose our gain within three days of purchase due to the busted ones. It makes sales difficult. But we cannot change the weather because we experience this every year. Nigerians should expect little quantity of tomatoes at higher rate,” said one of the traders.
