APC unveils 2027 election timetable, fixes presidential nomination form at ₦100m

Key points

  • APC releases detailed timetable for 2027 general elections primaries
  • Presidential nomination and expression of interest form pegged at ₦100m
  • Primary elections to commence May 15, 2026, with presidential contest

Main story

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has released its timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Elections, setting the cost of its presidential nomination and expression of interest forms at ₦100 million.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the schedule was approved and signed by the National Organising Secretary, Sulaiman Argungu.

According to the timetable, governorship aspirants are to pay ₦50 million, while aspirants for the Senate will pay ₦20 million and those for the House of Representatives ₦10 million. State House of Assembly aspirants are required to pay ₦6 million for both expression of interest and nomination forms.

The party, however, introduced concessions for female aspirants, youths, and persons living with disabilities, who are required to purchase only the expression of interest forms and will receive a 50 per cent discount on nomination fees.

The timetable indicates that the notice of election to state chapters commenced on April 20, 2026, signalling the official start of the party’s internal electoral process. The sale of nomination forms is scheduled to run from April 25 to May 2, while submission of completed forms will close on May 4.

Screening of aspirants across all categories is expected to take place between May 6 and May 8, with presidential aspirants screened on May 9. The publication of screening results is slated for May 11, while appeals will be entertained between May 12 and May 13.

Primary elections will begin with the presidential primary scheduled for May 15 and 16. This will be followed by House of Representatives primaries on May 18, Senate on May 20, State Houses of Assembly on May 21, and governorship primaries on May 23.

The issues

The high cost of nomination forms continues to generate debate over inclusivity and accessibility within Nigeria’s political system, with critics arguing that such fees may limit participation to only wealthy aspirants.

At the same time, political parties maintain that the fees help manage the number of aspirants and fund party activities.

What’s being said

Morka stated that the timetable reflects the party’s commitment to credible, transparent, and well-organised primary elections.

He added that the APC remains focused on strengthening internal democracy and ensuring fairness and equal opportunity for all aspirants.

What’s next

With the timetable now released, aspirants are expected to begin consultations and preparations ahead of the sale of forms and subsequent primaries.

Attention will also shift to how other political parties structure their nomination processes and fees as the 2027 election cycle gathers momentum.

Bottom line

The APC’s early release of its election timetable signals the formal kickoff of political activities ahead of 2027, but the steep nomination fees may continue to raise concerns about inclusivity in Nigeria’s democratic process.
