Abia, NRC in advanced talks to build new train station in Umuahia

Alex Otti, who has been named the election's winner of Abia State by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commented on his victory in the governor's race last Saturday.

Key points

  • Abia Government partners NRC on proposed rail station in Umuahia
  • Project to integrate transport, commerce, and urban mobility
  • State advances relocation, housing, and transport infrastructure plans

Main story

The Abia State Government has reached an advanced stage of discussions with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) for the construction of a new train station in Umuahia.

The State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting.

Kanu said the proposed station would be sited adjacent to the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal and designed as an integrated transport hub, featuring an urban rail corridor alongside commercial and retail spaces to stimulate economic activity.

He added that the project would be complemented by the construction of access roads to improve connectivity between the station and surrounding communities.

Beyond rail development, the commissioner said the government, through the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), had intensified efforts to relocate traders from Isi-Gate to the newly developed Relief Market in Afara.

According to him, compensation has been fully paid to affected landowners, while perimeter fencing at the new site is ongoing, signalling readiness for relocation.

Kanu further disclosed that the ultra-modern Umuahia Central Bus Terminal has been completed and is ready for commissioning. He noted that supporting infrastructure for the Umuahia Green Bus Service Scheme—including charging stations, ticketing points, bus shelters, and junction improvement works—has also been put in place.

He expressed optimism that the integrated transport system would position Umuahia among leading Nigerian cities with modern public transport infrastructure.

The commissioner also revealed that the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) had completed several projects, including road networks and a new daily market, all set for inauguration.

In the housing sector, Kanu said the state, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Housing, had concluded arrangements for the groundbreaking of a Federal Housing Authority estate along the Umuahia–Uzuakoli Road.

The issues

The development underscores the growing need for integrated urban transport systems in Nigerian cities, as governments seek to ease mobility challenges, decongest commercial centres, and stimulate economic growth.

It also reflects ongoing efforts to address urban planning issues, including market congestion and housing deficits.

What’s being said

The state government maintains that the projects form part of a broader strategy to modernise infrastructure, enhance economic activities, and improve quality of life for residents.

Kanu emphasised that the initiatives would boost connectivity, create business opportunities, and support the state’s long-term development agenda.

What’s next

With discussions at an advanced stage, attention will shift to final approvals and the commencement of construction of the proposed rail station.

The commissioning of the bus terminal, rollout of the green bus scheme, and groundbreaking of the housing project are also expected in the coming days.

Bottom line

Abia’s push for integrated transport and urban development signals a strategic effort to reposition Umuahia as a modern, economically vibrant city, leveraging infrastructure to drive growth and improve mobility.
