NIPP Plants See 408millionscf/d Gas Shortage

Eight of the 10 power plants in operation are in shortage of 408 million standard cubic feet, mmscf daily gas supply, the Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Ltd, NDPHC, Mr. Chiedu Ugbo, has said.

Ugbo, in a presentation at the National Association of Energy Correspondents, NAEC, in Lagos, said the eight plants built under the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPPs) required 615mmscf/d but “the current gas supply is 207mmscf/d thereby creating a deficit of 408mmscf/d.”

Although he did not give the power delivery capacity of the plants, Daily Trust reports that the 10 plants were to contribute about 5,000megawatts (mw) to the power sector.

With the eight plants in operation, an average of 4,000mw was expected but Mr. Ugbo said the shortage in gas supply has caused the loss of 1,965mw daily from the operational plants.

He noted that the gas consumption level of the plants could increase from the 615mmscf per day saying, “This will increase to 921mmscf/d by the time all the units are completed and commissioned.”
