Every year on October 5th, the world comes together to honor and celebrate the unsung heroes of our society – teachers. World Teachers’ Day serves as a global tribute to the individuals who shape our futures, laying the foundation for knowledge, growth, and progress.
In 2023, as world marks this special day, we acknowledge not only the remarkable work of teachers but also the urgent need to support and empower them.
The history of World Teachers’ Day dates back to 1966 when the International Labour Organization (ILO)/United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers was adopted, setting crucial standards for teacher rights, responsibilities, and education. Since 1994, this day has been an annual reminder of the invaluable contributions teachers make to our lives.
Under the theme “The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage,” the 2023 celebrations take a critical look at the challenges facing educators worldwide. In today’s complex educational landscape, teachers are facing a shortage crisis, coupled with declining working conditions and status.
Teachers are the architects of sustainable futures and personal fulfillment for countless individuals. However, to ensure the continued success of our education systems, we must address the shortage and improve the conditions for teachers.
This year’s celebration, co-convened with the International Labour Organization (ILO), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and Education International (EI), will focus on advocating for a dignified and valued teaching profession. Through various activities, it aims to shed light on the challenges teachers face, while also showcasing inspiring practices that can attract, retain, and motivate educators.
Additionally, it will explore the role of education systems, societies, communities, and families in recognizing, appreciating, and actively supporting our teachers.
As we celebrate World Teachers’ Day in Nigeria and across the globe, let us take a moment to express our gratitude to the educators who have shaped our lives. Let us also commit to working together to provide them with the support and recognition they deserve. Only by empowering teachers can we truly achieve the education we want and build a brighter future for all.
