The Senate has put modalities in place to thoroughly examine the electricity situation in the country within the parameters of present economic realities and arrive at tariffs that will be affordable to the people and also beneficial to the power sector companies.
The senate committee chairman on Employment, Labour and Productivity, Sen. Suleiman Nazif, with the Senate Committee on Power have arranged for a meeting of stakeholders on the increase of electricity tariff soonest. The stakeholders include, Ministry of Power, NERC, Discos, Gencos and the Labour Union.
Nazif, however, pleaded with Nigerian workers and the Nigerian masses to be calm and hopeful “because the crux of the tariff increase will be thoroughly examined within the parameters of present economic realities and by extension arrive at tariffs that will be pocket-friendly to Nigerian people and also beneficial to the power sector companies.”
He, therefore, urged Nigerian workers and indeed the entire Nigerian masses to be more patient, because as true representatives of the people, the National Assembly will remain the castle of hope of the Nigerian masses and thus, their expectation over this matter will not be dashed.
He extended his clarion call on the power sector companies to be mindful of the current economic crunch on Nigerian masses, and be prepared to contribute meaningfully during the hearing process to restore the confidence of the people on their activities.
