Main story

The Federal Government says it has begun constructing 100 housing units in each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas as part of efforts to provide shelter for vulnerable groups, including victims of insecurity.

Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Enlightenment, Mr Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, disclosed this on Tuesday during an inspection of Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Renewed Hope City project in Janguza, Kano.

According to Abdulaziz, the initiative, known as the Tinubu Estate, is already being implemented across the country to provide housing support for disadvantaged Nigerians.

“Apart from these Phase 1 and 2 of the Renewed Hope City project, there are also 100 housing units per local government, which have commenced as Tinubu Estate,” he said.

He explained that the estates are specifically designed to cater to vulnerable groups, particularly victims of insecurity and others facing social and economic hardship.

“They are targeted at vulnerable groups, especially victims of insecurity and other disadvantaged persons in the society. And this is being done across all local governments in Nigeria as we speak,” Abdulaziz added.

Speaking on the Renewed Hope City project, the presidential aide said the broader housing programme forms part of the Tinubu administration’s strategy to tackle Nigeria’s housing deficit while making home ownership more affordable for workers and other citizens.

He noted that the project had already attracted subscribers, with allocations made to beneficiaries, describing it as one of several long-term interventions aimed at addressing key national challenges.

Project Manager, Builder Awe Augustine-Babatunde, said construction of the first phase, comprising 325 housing units, had been completed.

He added that Phase 2, which consists of 698 housing units, had reached about 75 per cent completion, with 426 units already built, and is scheduled for completion by August.

Augustine-Babatunde said the development would include supporting infrastructure such as internal road networks, a school, a healthcare centre and a playground to ensure the estate is fully functional for residents.

The issues

Nigeria faces a housing deficit estimated in the millions of units, with affordability remaining a major challenge for low- and middle-income households. Through the Renewed Hope Housing Programme, the Federal Government aims to expand access to affordable homes while providing targeted support for vulnerable groups, including people displaced by insecurity.
