NECO Releases 2023 SSCE Results

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has formally announced the release of the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External results, reporting strong overall performance among candidates nationwide.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Registrar and Chief Executive of NECO, Professor Dantani Wushishi, during a press briefing held at the council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State.

In an official video statement shared on NECO’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Professor Wushishi confirmed that the results had been fully processed and approved for release.

“It gives me great pleasure to officially announce that the 2025 SSCE External Examination results have been released,” he stated.

According to the registrar, candidates who participated in the examination can now check their results online via the council’s official portal at www.neco.gov.ng by entering their examination registration details.

Providing a statistical breakdown of the examination, Professor Wushishi disclosed that a total of 96,979 candidates registered for the 2025 SSCE External examination across the country. Of this figure, 51,823 candidates were male, representing 53.43 per cent of total registrations, while 45,156 candidates were female, accounting for 46.56 per cent.

Out of the total number of registered candidates, 95,160 eventually sat for the examination.

Performance data released by the council showed encouraging outcomes across core subjects. In English Language, 93,425 candidates took the paper, with 73,167 candidates—equivalent to 78.32 per cent—achieving credit-level passes and above.

Mathematics recorded an even stronger showing. Of the 93,330 candidates who sat for the subject, 85,256 candidates, representing 91.35 per cent, earned credit passes or higher.

Overall performance figures revealed that 68,166 candidates, amounting to 71.63 per cent, obtained at least five credits including English Language and Mathematics. When English and Mathematics were excluded from the criteria, the number rose to 82,082 candidates, or 86.26 per cent, who achieved five credits and above.

Addressing issues of examination integrity, Professor Wushishi disclosed that 9,016 candidates were implicated in various forms of examination malpractice during the 2025 SSCE External examination. This figure represents a 31.7 per cent increase compared to the 6,160 malpractice cases recorded during the 2024 examination cycle.

The NECO boss also announced disciplinary measures against examination officials found culpable. Five supervisors—two from the Federal Capital Territory and one each from Kano, Adamawa, and Ondo states—have been recommended for blacklisting over their alleged involvement in aiding examination misconduct.

Additionally, four examination centres were recommended for de-recognition after investigations revealed cases of whole-centre malpractice. Two of the affected centres were located in Niger State, while the remaining two were in Yobe and Kano states respectively.

The SSCE External examination is designed primarily for private candidates who are not enrolled in the conventional school system. It also serves individuals seeking to improve previous examination results or obtain certification for academic and professional advancement.

NECO reiterated its commitment to maintaining examination standards while expanding access to certification opportunities for Nigerians outside the regular school-based examination framework.
