Key points

  • Nigerian troops neutralise terrorists and disrupt criminal activities across multiple theatres
  • Kidnap attempt foiled in Kwara, with victim rescued and suspects arrested
  • Weapons, mobile phones and rustled livestock recovered in coordinated operations

Main story

Nigerian troops have intensified nationwide security operations, neutralising suspected terrorists, foiling kidnap attempts and recovering weapons and stolen property in a series of coordinated offensives over the past 24 hours.

According to operational updates, troops under the Joint Task Force Operation HADIN KAI recorded notable successes in the North-East, particularly in Borno State.

Troops of the 202 Battalion reportedly neutralised two suspected terrorists during an ambush along the Aulari–Kawuri axis in Bama Local Government Area. The suspects were engaged after being detected advancing towards Yale Forest through surveillance systems.

In the North-West, troops operating under Operation FANSAN YAMMA carried out multiple successful missions across Zamfara and Katsina States.

In Zamfara State, troops of the 1 Brigade Quick Response Force neutralised one terrorist during a fighting patrol in Maru Local Government Area, recovering seven mobile phones from the scene.

Similarly, in Katsina State, troops of the 17 Brigade recovered two pump-action guns and cartridges during an operation in Kankara Local Government Area.

In a separate incident, troops working alongside police and local vigilantes repelled a terrorist attack in Malumfashi, forcing the assailants to flee. Security forces recovered 19 rustled livestock, which were subsequently handed over to local authorities.

Meanwhile, in Kwara State, troops under Operation SAVANNAH SHIELD foiled a kidnap attempt in Patigi Local Government Area, rescuing a victim and arresting two suspected kidnappers. Two single-barrel guns were also recovered during the operation.

The issues

Despite ongoing military operations, Nigeria continues to grapple with persistent security threats, including terrorism, kidnapping and armed banditry, particularly in the North-East, North-West and parts of the North-Central region.

The recurring incidents highlight the adaptability of criminal networks and the challenges faced in securing vast and often difficult terrain.

There are also concerns about the circulation of illegal arms and the role of local collaborators in sustaining criminal activities.

What’s being said

Security officials maintain that sustained intelligence-led operations, surveillance and inter-agency collaboration are key to curbing insecurity across the country.

Troops have also emphasised the importance of community support, noting that cooperation with local vigilantes and residents played a critical role in some of the recent successes.

Authorities say the recovery of weapons and stolen livestock demonstrates progress in disrupting criminal supply chains and weakening insurgent capabilities.

What’s next

Security agencies are expected to continue intensified operations across all affected regions, with a focus on intelligence-driven interventions and coordinated multi-agency responses.

The military has reiterated its commitment to sustaining pressure on criminal elements while ensuring the protection of civilians and restoration of normalcy in affected communities.

Bottom line

The recent wave of military successes underscores ongoing efforts to combat insecurity across Nigeria, but experts say sustained operations, stronger intelligence and community cooperation will be critical to achieving lasting stability.
