Niger State governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, has hinted that the current economic down turn in the country may force his administration to review the salaries of workers downwards, even as he revealed that the state borrowed N3billion to pay workers’ salary.
He said this while fielding questions from State House correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Governor Bello said his administration was engaging the leadership of the organised labour in the state to push that position, adding that even though he was willing to pay workers’ salary as at when due, available resources could not cope with that at the moment.
He further uncovered that he had to cut down the weekly expenditure of the Government House from N150million he inherited from the immediate past administration in the state to about N25million.
Bello, however, debunked reports that his administration had already resolved to pay workers in the state half salaries henceforth. Bello lamented a situation whereby the government had to borrow on monthly basis to augument its monthly allocation from the federation account, disclosing that the state was already indebted to the tune of N3billion for that purpose.
