The Comptroller-General of Customs, Hameed Ali, has approved the merging of Lilypond Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Ijora, Lagos as Tin Can Island Port 2. The merge has effectively put the Lilypond Command under the Tin Can Island Port Command, which is the second highest revenue generating command of the NCS.
According to report, the redesignation is expected to revive operations at the moribund Lilypond Terminal, which has suffered from inactivity for more than two years as a result of low cargo volume. Already, clearing agents and freight forwarders at the terminal have expressed joy with the redesignation.
The National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), in a letter to the Customs Comptroller-General on Friday, commended Ali for the redesignation.
The letter read, “It is with the highest gratitude we write you this congratulatory letter to commend your recent strategic action to make the erstwhile Lilypond Command of the Nigeria Customs a fully functional command again by designating the Command as Tincan Island Port 2.
“This is a salutary move that will bring succor to both the men and officers of the Service who for quite a while have been underutilized and collaterally made the stakeholders comprising of freight forwarders and other operatives at the Command redundant.
“We say without any equivocation that this your policy move has rekindled the hope and joy of all that use the command as their primary duty post. We wish to encourage you to continue to bring this kind of innovation into the total operation of the Nigeria Customs Service,” NAGAFF stated in the letter signed by its Legal Adviser, Barr. Fred Akokhia.
