Main story

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), in collaboration with the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), has sealed Westgate Arena Club and 12 other establishments across Lagos State over various environmental violations, including persistent noise pollution and non-compliance with regulatory directives.

The enforcement operation, carried out on Monday, June 15, 2026, followed a directive by the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, as part of the state government’s efforts to enforce environmental laws and safeguard residents from environmental nuisances.

Westgate Arena Club, located at Apostolic Church Close, Olowora, was shut down for persistent noise pollution.

According to LASEPA, the enforcement exercise was undertaken after repeated warnings, abatement notices, and continued failure by affected establishments to comply with environmental regulations.

Other facilities affected by the operation include Golden Click Hotel in Baruwa; 14:02 Lounge & Bar in Ipaja; Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Aguda, Surulere; Kilo Hotel in Kilo, Surulere; Max Lounge on Bode Thomas Street; The Hotel Macs in Aguda; Hotel Bel Am in Ijesha; Fecomillion Hotel in Surulere; PetroSafe Gas Station on Ijesha Road; Serena Hotel and Suites in Surulere; CitiLounge in Ishaga; and Gariot on Ogunlana Drive.

The establishments were sanctioned for offences ranging from noise pollution and air pollution to obstruction of official duties and failure to comply with the agency’s directives.

Speaking on the operation, the General Manager of LASEPA, Babatunde Ajayi, said the agency remains committed to protecting public health and ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable environment across the state.

He noted that environmental compliance is a shared responsibility and urged individuals and businesses to strictly adhere to environmental laws and regulations.

The issues

Noise pollution has become a growing concern in Lagos, particularly in densely populated residential and commercial areas where entertainment centres, religious organisations, hospitality businesses, and industrial activities often generate excessive noise.

Environmental experts have warned that prolonged exposure to noise pollution can have adverse effects on public health, including stress, sleep disturbances, hearing impairment, and reduced quality of life.

The enforcement actions also underscore the government’s determination to ensure that businesses operate within approved environmental standards and do not constitute a nuisance to surrounding communities.

What’s being said

According to Ajayi, “Environmental compliance is a collective responsibility. Individuals and corporate organisations must adhere strictly to environmental laws and regulations.”

He added that LASEPA would continue to intensify enforcement actions against violators to curb environmental nuisances and protect residents from the harmful effects of pollution.

The LASEPA boss also urged residents and business owners to adopt environmentally responsible practices and cooperate with regulatory authorities in promoting a cleaner and healthier Lagos.

What’s next

LASEPA said affected establishments would be required to address identified environmental violations and comply fully with regulatory requirements before consideration for reopening.

The agency also pledged to sustain monitoring and enforcement operations across the state to ensure compliance with environmental standards.

Bottom line

The latest enforcement exercise signals the Lagos State Government’s renewed crackdown on environmental violations, particularly noise pollution, as authorities seek to create a cleaner, safer, and more livable environment for residents and businesses across the state.
