The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the implementation of the newly approved 50% telecommunications tariff adjustment to safeguard consumer interests and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Ondaje Ijagwu, stated that the commission is collaborating with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to address consumer concerns during and after the tariff transition.
Ijagwu urged telecom operators to prioritise tangible improvements in network reliability, internet speed, accessibility, and customer service as part of the tariff adjustment. He emphasised that the increase must result in demonstrable benefits for consumers, aligning with their interests.
He commended the NCC for adopting a balanced approach by approving a 50% tariff increase, significantly lower than the over 100% hike initially proposed by telecom operators. This, he said, reflects a thoughtful effort to balance industry sustainability with consumer protection.
“The NCC’s directive ensures that tariffs are now clear, straightforward, and free of hidden charges or complexities. Operators must disclose all key details upfront, including costs, validity periods, and specific plan inclusions,” Ijagwu noted.
Additionally, he highlighted the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the FCCPC and NCC as a unified framework for overseeing the tariff implementation while prioritising consumer needs.
Ijagwu encouraged Nigerians to report any unfair practices or irregularities through FCCPC’s official channels, pledging timely and effective resolutions.
