Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola was informed that about 150 megawatts of electricity was been wasted at the Odukpani National Independent Power Plant (NIPP).
The disclosure came to the fore during the fourth meeting of the Minister and stakeholders of the power sector also in Odupkani, a community in Cross River State.
However, Fashola gave an directive to Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) to fast-track the immediate distribution of the 150 megawatts to lines and sub-stations within the area.
He disclosed that five generating units would start supplying power to Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Makurdi and Jos between now and August.
Meanwhile, in the communique issued at the end of the stakeholders’ meeting, the minister highlighted how shortage of gas had affected output from power stations connected to the Escravos – Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS).
The communique also disclose that the minister was mulling the repairs of Forcados Oil Export Line to ameliorate the gas shortage.
At the end of the meeting, stakeholders agreed that decisions made would be binding and any operator that failed to implement collective decisions would be sanctioned.
They also agreed with the minister that there was need for the Discos’ customer complaints units to be more responsiveness and ensure that all complaints from paying customers were promptly acknowledged and resolved swiftly. ,” the document read in part.
