Ebola Alert: Uganda Tightens Border as Nigeria investigates virus Source

Key Points

  • Uganda has introduced a mandatory 21-day quarantine for citizens returning from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
  • Nigeria is investigating an imported case of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola involving a woman who recently travelled through Uganda.
  • Uganda says 60 contacts linked to a Kenyan Ebola patient completed monitoring without developing symptoms.
  • Health authorities are reviewing travel records and genomic evidence to establish the source of the Nigerian infection.
  • Africa CDC has called for international support to strengthen Nigeria’s Ebola response.

Main Story

Uganda has introduced a mandatory 21-day quarantine for citizens returning from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), as health authorities intensify efforts to prevent Ebola from spreading across borders.

Uganda’s Health Minister, Chris Baryomunsi, announced the measure on Sunday, October 25, 2026, during a briefing in Kampala. The government has also strengthened screening at airports and land border crossings as investigations continue into Nigeria’s first reported imported Ebola case.

The Nigerian case involves a woman who recently travelled through Uganda and tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus disease. Nigeria confirmed the infection on October 20, prompting health officials to isolate the patient and begin tracing people who may have been exposed.

However, the woman’s travel history has not established where she contracted the virus. Uganda has maintained that travelling through its territory does not prove that the infection originated there.

Authorities are working with international partners to examine travel records, possible contacts and genomic sequencing results. These investigations could help establish whether the Nigerian infection is connected to cases reported elsewhere in the region.

Baryomunsi said Uganda had also strengthened traveller screening at Entebbe International Airport and other entry points. Travellers entering the country by air, land or water must complete passenger locator forms to support public health monitoring.

The minister added that 60 people identified as contacts of a Kenyan Ebola patient had completed their 21-day monitoring period without developing symptoms. They were subsequently discharged from monitoring.

The Issues

The developing situation highlights the challenges of containing Ebola when people travel between countries before an infection is detected.

Identifying the source of an infection is important because it helps authorities determine where exposure may have occurred, identify contacts and direct surveillance towards locations at greater risk.

Genomic sequencing can reveal how closely related viruses from different patients are. However, genetic similarities alone do not establish exactly where or how an individual became infected.

Uncertainty surrounding the woman’s movements has therefore made cooperation between health authorities particularly important.

What’s Being Said

Ugandan authorities have stressed that the patient’s travel history is not enough to establish that she contracted Ebola in the country.

Nigeria’s health authorities have also said that although genomic analysis suggests a close relationship between the Nigerian infection and Kenya’s initial case, a direct epidemiological link has not been established.

Meanwhile, Africa CDC has called for international assistance to support Nigeria’s response, including funding, diagnostic equipment and stronger disease surveillance.

The agency has also raised concerns about financial accountability in previous Ebola response programmes in the DRC, although it has cautioned against concluding that reported gaps in financial information necessarily indicate misappropriation.

What’s Next

Investigators are expected to continue reviewing genomic findings, travel histories and potential exposure routes to determine the source of Nigeria’s infection.

Uganda’s quarantine and screening measures are intended to reduce the risk of further transmission, while Nigerian authorities continue monitoring people who may have been exposed.

Bottom Line

Uganda’s new quarantine measures reflect growing concern about Ebola transmission across national borders. While the source of Nigeria’s imported infection remains unresolved, timely information-sharing, effective contact tracing and transparent international support will be essential to containing the outbreak and preventing further cases.
