Key points
- The Nigerian Navy discovered a hidden crude oil storage site in Delta State linked to suspected crude oil theft activities.
- The operation was carried out by personnel of NNS DELTA under Operation Delta Sentinel.
- Approximately 17,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil were recovered from the site.
- The storage facility was concealed beneath vegetation and other materials to avoid detection.
- The Navy said intelligence-led operations and aerial surveillance were critical to the discovery.
Main Story
The Nigerian Navy has uncovered a concealed crude oil storage site believed to have been used to support crude oil theft operations within the Niger Delta region.
The discovery was disclosed in an operational report issued by the Director of Naval Information, Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho, and made available on Tuesday in Abuja.
According to Folorunsho, the operation was conducted by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) DELTA under Operation Delta Sentinel following actionable intelligence on suspected crude oil theft activities around the Ugbokodo Creek axis of Delta State.
He said naval personnel, supported by aerial surveillance assets, carried out a detailed search of the area after receiving intelligence reports.
Folorunsho explained that although the location initially appeared free of suspicious activity, further assessment and analysis of drone imagery revealed a large reservoir that had been freshly excavated and carefully concealed.
The reservoir was reportedly covered with leaves, planks, wood and dense vegetation in an attempt to evade detection by security agencies.
Subsequent exploitation of the site led to the recovery of about 17,000 litres of products suspected to be stolen crude oil stored within the concealed facility.
According to the Navy, evidence at the location indicated recent crude oil theft activities, with the site believed to have served as a temporary storage point within an illegal supply chain.
Folorunsho said the discovery demonstrated the increasingly sophisticated methods being employed by criminal networks involved in crude oil theft across the Niger Delta.
He, however, noted that the Navy’s use of intelligence gathering and aerial surveillance capabilities continues to improve its capacity to identify and disrupt illegal operations targeting the nation’s oil resources.
The naval spokesperson added that the recovered products, storage facility and associated materials were handled in line with established operational procedures, preventing their further use in criminal activities.
He reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to sustaining operations aimed at protecting critical energy infrastructure and curbing economic sabotage.
The Issues
- Persistent crude oil theft and illegal bunkering activities in the Niger Delta.
- Increasingly sophisticated concealment methods used by criminal networks.
- The need for sustained surveillance and intelligence gathering to protect oil infrastructure.
What’s Being Said
- Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho said: “Although the location initially appeared free of suspicious activity, further observation and analysis of drone imagery revealed a large freshly dug reservoir, deliberately concealed beneath leaves, planks, wood, and thick vegetation to evade detection.”
- He said approximately 17,000 litres of products suspected to be stolen crude oil were recovered from the site.
- Folorunsho added that the discovery highlights “the increasingly sophisticated concealment methods being adopted by criminal elements to sustain crude oil theft operations.”
What’s Next
- The Navy will continue surveillance and clearance operations in the affected area.
- Intelligence-driven operations under Operation Delta Sentinel are expected to intensify across crude oil theft hotspots.
- Security agencies will continue efforts to dismantle illegal supply networks linked to stolen crude oil.
Bottom Line
The discovery of a concealed crude oil storage facility containing about 17,000 litres of suspected stolen crude underscores the evolving tactics of oil theft networks in the Niger Delta and highlights the growing role of intelligence and aerial surveillance in countering economic sabotage.
