Main story
MainPower Electricity Distribution Ltd. (MEDL) has appealed to residents of Enugu State to observe strict electrical safety measures as heavy rainfall, flooding and windstorms increase the risk of electrocution and damage to power infrastructure.
The company issued the advisory following recent severe weather conditions that affected several parts of the state, warning residents to stay away from electricity installations during rainfall and storms.
Head of Communications, Mr Emeka Ezeh, urged residents to remain indoors or seek shelter away from electricity poles, overhead power lines and other electrical facilities whenever it rains. He cautioned against taking refuge under trees, noting that strong winds could bring down trees, electricity poles and power lines, creating life-threatening hazards.
Ezeh also advised residents not to handle electrical appliances, switches or sockets with wet hands, explaining that moisture significantly increases the risk of electric shock. He stressed the need for homes and business premises to have properly insulated and well-maintained electrical installations to minimise accidents.
He called on parents and guardians to keep children away from electrical installations during the rainy season and encouraged households to unplug sensitive electrical appliances during severe thunderstorms to protect them from lightning-induced power surges.
The company further urged residents to promptly report fallen electricity poles, snapped conductors, damaged transformers and other unsafe electrical installations through its emergency response channels to enable swift intervention.
Ezeh reaffirmed MainPower’s commitment to maintaining safe and reliable electricity distribution during the rainy season, adding that public cooperation remains essential to preventing avoidable accidents and protecting lives.
