Teachers Get N9.5m in Anambra

NUT) Warns Against Unpaid Teachers’ Salaries

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Anambra chapter,Awka has disbursed about N9.5million to 804 retired teachers in the state.

NUT State Chairman, Ifeanyi Ofodile said that the beneficiaries were drawn from the 21 local government areas of the state. He said the retirees were paid between N10,000 And N14,000 each.

He said the NUT endowment welfare scheme was an annual event, aimed at cushioning the hard economic situation the retirees may face after retirement from service.

The chairman stated that the money disbursed to the beneficiaries was for 2012, 2013 and 2014. He also lauded Gov.Willie Obiano for creating enabling environment for teachers and students in Anambra.

However, he said that the education sector had not fared well in the country generally. He said that the recent Single Treasury Account (TSA) introduced by the Federal Government was affecting the members who had to wait for long protocol to receive their entitlement.

“I do not know whether the bailout fund is even helping matters because we have not felt the positive impact,” he said.
