The Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, has made a case for the need for the federal government to have a deliberate policy to develop 100 kilometres of rail tracks annually.
According to NRC, such policy will sustain the tempo in the revitalization of railway system in Nigeria.
The acting Managing Director of the NRC, Fidet Okhiria, said the tracks should especially target production centres to enable movement of goods from one part of the country to another.
Okhiria, who addressed newsmen at the NRC compound in Lagos, Tuesday, April 12, disclosed that the corporation’s target was to increase its freight movement to shore up its revenue.
Currently, it has commenced movement of cement from Ewekoro cement factory in Ogun State to the North as well as containers from Apapa terminals while freight movement from Ashaka cement factory in Bauchi would soon commence.
The corporation said it was in talks with the major marketers to commence movement of petroleum products across the country with its current capacity to move 800,000 litres.
He said that as part of its drive to increase freight movement across the country, the corporation would start movement of coal from Igumale in Enugu to Port Harcourt port beginning from June this year.
About 150,000 tonnes would be moved monthly, he added.
