The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says its linesmen found the body of a suspected vandal beneath a collapsed transmission tower in Delta State.
TCN management disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, saying the incident occurred on the 330 kilovolt (kV) Ughelli-Benin transmission line.
The discovery was made during an intensive patrol by the Delta Sub-Region Lines Maintenance Department following the tripping of the line on an earth fault.
According to the company, the patrol team traced the fault to Tower 101, where they found the structure had collapsed and the suspected vandal’s body was trapped among the tower members.
Further inspection showed that Tower 101 on the adjacent Ughelli-Sapele 330kV transmission line had also been seriously vandalised, although the structure remained standing at the time of the report.
TCN condemned the vandalism and urged host communities and members of the public to remain vigilant around electricity infrastructure.
The company called on anyone who notices suspicious activities around power installations to report them to security agencies or the nearest TCN office.
TCN said the incident demonstrated the dangers associated with tampering with electricity infrastructure, noting that vandalism could cause power outages, damage national assets and result in loss of life.
