SanDisk, Micron Expand Data Storage Frontier with 1 TB MicroSD Cards

Western Digital’s SanDisk and Micron have each announced 1 TB microSD cards at the Mobile World Congress 2019.

With these mobile storage solutions, worrying about not having enough space on smartphones and the like will be a thing of the past for buyers.

SanDisk’s Extreme MicroSD Card

SanDisk is offering what it calls Extreme microSD UHS-I cards. Options of this line range from 32 GB all the way to 1 TB, which boasts an A2 rating, a read speed of up to 160 MB/s, and a write speed of up to 90 MB/s.

“People trust SanDisk-brand cards to capture and preserve their world. Our goal is to deliver the best possible experience so consumers can share the content that’s important to them,” Brian Pridgeon, marketing director for SanDisk products at WD, said in a press release.

The 512 GB and 1 TB cards can already be reserved on the company’s website.

Micron’s c200 MicroSD Card

Micron is touting its new c200 1 TB microSD card as the “world’s first” to have that capacity. That’s despite SanDisk announcing its 1 TB microSD card and Lexar, which was previously a subsidiary of Micron, being the first to release one in the market.

Regarding performance, it’s capable of providing a read speed of up to 100 MB/s and a write speed up to 95 MB/s.

“The new c200 1TB microSD card gives consumers the freedom to capture, share, store and enjoy more content while supporting their mobile-centric lifestyles,” Aravind Ramamoorthy, senior director of the NAND product line at Micron, said.

As a quick comparison of the two new 1 TB cards in town, SanDisk is way ahead in terms of read speed, while Micron inches past its rival when it comes to write speed.

Now 1 TB is arguably more than enough space than users would need, but the upside to that is, they probably won’t need to ever buy another microSD card for a long, long time.

SanDisk’s Extreme 1 TB microSD card is expected to hit the shelves sometime in April with a $450 price tag. Meanwhile, Micron has yet to announce any pricing details of its offering, but it’s set to become available sometime during the second quarter of 2019.
