Key points

  • Rivers State Government approves ₦100 million relief fund for Bille community.
  • Intervention includes potable water and medical support for affected residents.
  • Authorities pledge long-term solution to ongoing gas emission since November 2025.

Main story

The Rivers State Government has approved a ₦100 million relief package for residents of Bille community in Degema Local Government Area following concerns over persistent gas emissions in the area.

The Secretary to the State Government, Dagogo Wokoma, disclosed this during a visit to the community on behalf of Governor Siminalayi Fubara to assess the environmental situation.

Wokoma said the financial support forms part of interim measures aimed at alleviating the impact of the gas emissions on residents, adding that the government would also provide potable water and essential medical services.

He noted that the administration remained committed to addressing the root cause of the environmental challenge, which has reportedly persisted since November 2025.

“The governor remains deeply concerned about the health and well-being of the people of Bille Kingdom. Although he could not attend in person, he is fully aware of the situation and determined to tackle the problem,” Wokoma said.

The issues

Residents of Bille community have raised concerns over the health and environmental risks posed by the gas emissions, which have affected waterways and living conditions in the area.

Community leaders described the situation as unusual and potentially hazardous, warning that prolonged exposure could have serious implications for public health and livelihoods.

The crisis highlights broader environmental challenges in oil-producing communities, including pollution and inadequate response mechanisms.

What’s being said

Wokoma assured residents that the government would continue to pursue a lasting solution while providing immediate relief to ease their suffering.

He urged the community to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them of the administration’s commitment to resolving the issue.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Council of Chiefs of Bille Kingdom, Bennet Dokubo, commended the government for its intervention but called for urgent action to address the underlying problem.

“If you visit the river, you will see the entire environment bubbling and emitting odour. This is something strange and dangerous to human health,” he said.

What’s next

The state government is expected to intensify investigations into the source of the gas emissions and collaborate with relevant environmental and regulatory agencies to implement a permanent solution.

Further assessments and monitoring of the affected area are also likely as authorities work to contain the situation.

Bottom line

While the ₦100 million relief package provides immediate support, residents say a swift and lasting solution to the gas emission crisis is critical to safeguarding health, livelihoods and the environment in Bille community.
