BBNaija housemates reflect on nominations as diary sessions expose shifting alliances

By Boluwatife Oshadiya | August 6, 2026

Key Points

  • Housemates used their Diary Sessions to explain why they saved certain contestants and reflected on Monday’s nomination outcome.
  • Several contestants admitted they were surprised by the House’s decision to save Tram and Chimsom Chuka.
  • Big Brother also revealed Aikou as one of this season’s Gambits, while Nomy received a punishment for breaching her Bench Warmer task.

Main Story

The Big Brother Naija Season 11 House entered Day 10 with emotions from Monday’s nominations still running high, as housemates used their Diary Sessions to discuss shifting alliances, unexpected save decisions and growing divisions ahead of this week’s wager task.

After the morning workout and household chores, conversations quickly turned to the nomination process. Saved housemate Tram joked that any contestant evicted from the House should visit his dog, while Ricky maintained he was unconcerned about other housemates’ opinions. Elsewhere, Chimsom Chuka and Kamsy continued to fuel speculation about a budding relationship after sharing another intimate moment.

During the Diary Sessions, several housemates explained the reasoning behind their nomination choices. Martins said he saved Gerard, Yusuf and Abi because of the strong relationships they had built, while Mercedes admitted she expected not to be saved but was surprised the House rallied behind Tram despite hearing negative opinions about him.

Kamsy, Cassi and Bluethopia echoed similar sentiments, describing the House as increasingly divided following the conspiracy phase. Although each defended their individual voting decisions, all admitted they were caught off guard by some of the contestants who eventually secured enough support to avoid possible eviction.

One of the day’s biggest moments came when Biggie informed Aikou that he is one of this season’s Gambits, a revelation that visibly shocked the housemate. Before the announcement, Aikou said he saved Barry and Abi because of the genuine connections he had formed inside the House.

Biggie also sanctioned Nomy for failing to fully complete her Bench Warmer task, directing her to clean the House toilets for the remainder of the week.

What’s Being Said

Martins defended his nomination strategy, saying, “I saved Gerard, Yusuf and Abi because of the bond we’ve built in the House. Abi is like the female version of me.”

Mercedes said the atmosphere in the House had become more fractured, adding, “The House is becoming more divided as trust begins to fade.”

Chimsom Chuka described the conspiracy phase as revealing, saying it “opened my eyes to who bonds with who,” while noting that Tram’s popularity had changed his perception of several housemates.

What’s Next

  • Housemates will continue preparations for this week’s wager presentation under Head of House Sheba’s leadership.
  • All contestants remain up for possible eviction except Sheba, Gambit Aikou, Flora, Chimsom Chuka, and House-saved contestants Barry, Bells, Goddessa and Tram.
  • Voting remains open until Thursday at 9:00 p.m. WAT ahead of Sunday’s live eviction show.

The Bottom Line: Day 10 highlighted how Monday’s nominations have reshaped relationships inside the BBNaija House. As alliances become clearer and strategic gameplay intensifies, social dynamics are increasingly likely to influence both future nominations and viewers’ voting decisions.

Key points

  • Access Holdings increased its green asset portfolio to ₦92.14 billion in 2025 while reducing operational emissions by 28.47 per cent.
  • The group provided financial access to about 2.53 million low-income individuals and financed more than 78,000 MSMEs.
  • It mobilised ₦266.83 billion in concessional funding and reported zero material sustainability-related regulatory penalties.

Main story

Access Holdings Plc says it expanded its green asset portfolio to ₦92.14 billion and reduced operational greenhouse gas emissions by 28.47 per cent in 2025, as it deepened the integration of sustainability into its business operations.

The company disclosed this in its 2025 Sustainability Report released on the Nigerian Exchange Limited.

According to the report, the green asset portfolio increased from ₦72.32 billion in 2024, while cumulative sustainability-focused lending reached 1.269 billion dollars under the group’s Sustainable Finance Framework.

The report showed that operational greenhouse gas emissions declined to 49,352 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent from 57,176 tonnes recorded in 2024.

Access Holdings attributed the reduction largely to the solarisation of 263 branches and the deployment of 323 solar-powered automated teller machines across its operations.

The group also expanded financial inclusion by providing access to finance for about 2.53 million low-income individuals and onboarding 78,438 micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) onto its financing platform.

It processed about 2.8 billion transactions during the year and extended 354,156 loans valued at ₦67.4 billion to women and women-owned businesses.

The report further showed that the group’s corporate social investment programmes reached more than 2.43 million beneficiaries across education, healthcare, entrepreneurship and environmental initiatives.

Employees contributed 359,500 volunteer hours with full workforce participation, while more than 50,000 trees were planted during the year.

Access Holdings said women accounted for 49 per cent of its workforce, while female directors represented 44.4 per cent of the board.

Employee satisfaction rose to 87 per cent, exceeding the group’s target of 80 per cent, while staff attrition declined to about 11 per cent.

The company said its sustainability reporting adopted the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards as the primary reporting framework, supported by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) standards.

It added that selected disclosures received independent assurance under ISAE 3000 (Revised).

According to the report, sustainability oversight is embedded within board governance, risk management and credit approval processes through dedicated board committees and an ESG screening framework aligned with IFC Performance Standards and the Equator Principles.

The group also reported zero material sustainability-related regulatory penalties and zero cybersecurity breaches during the year.

Access Holdings mobilised 185.38 million dollars, equivalent to ₦266.83 billion, in concessional funding from development finance institutions and allocated ₦4.8 billion from profit before tax to sustainability initiatives.

Access Holdings’ latest sustainability report highlights continued investment in green finance, financial inclusion and climate action as the group positions sustainability as a core driver of long-term business growth and resilience.

Scholar seeks stronger powers for states in Nigeria’s federation

Key points

  • NIIA DG calls for a better balance of powers between the Federal Government and states.
  • He says Nigeria’s highly centralised structure has made federalism increasingly contested.
  • UNIBEN launches annual federalism lecture to deepen research and policy dialogue on governance.

Main story

The Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Prof. Eghosa Osaghae, has called for a rebalance of powers between the Federal Government and the federating units to strengthen Nigeria’s federal system.

Osaghae made the call on Wednesday while delivering the maiden Annual Federalism Lecture of the Centre for Federalism and Democratic Studies at the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

The lecture, titled Federalism: The Paradigm of a Turning Centre, examined the evolution of Nigeria’s federal structure and the need for continuous adjustments in the distribution of powers.

Osaghae said federal systems are dynamic and must respond to changing political realities by maintaining an appropriate balance between the central government and sub-national governments.

According to him, Nigeria has evolved from a region-centred federation to a highly centralised system, making the practice of federalism increasingly contested.

He explained that the powers of the central government in any federation depend on the prevailing balance of political forces, warning that failure to adjust those powers could threaten the stability of the federation.

Osaghae said federal systems generally emerge either through the voluntary union of independent states or through the devolution of powers from a centralised state, noting that Nigeria belongs to the latter category.

He argued that this explains why negotiations over the sharing of powers have remained a recurring feature of Nigeria’s federal arrangement.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s constitutional history, Osaghae said the country operated a region-centred federal system before the 1966 military intervention, with the regions exercising considerable autonomy.

He noted that the military administration subsequently concentrated greater powers at the centre, fundamentally altering the country’s federal structure.

The NIIA director-general also urged advocates of true federalism to focus on strengthening the productive capacity and fiscal independence of states rather than seeking larger allocations from the Federal Government.

He maintained that a sustainable federation requires a balanced distribution of powers and responsibilities across all levels of government.

Vice-Chancellor of UNIBEN, Prof. Edoba Omoregie (SAN), said the establishment of the Centre for Federalism and Democratic Studies reflected the university’s commitment to advancing research and policy solutions on governance.

He said the centre would promote research, policy dialogue and public engagement on federalism, constitutionalism, democracy, good governance and peacebuilding.

Omoregie added that the annual lecture series would encourage informed discussions on governance issues and position the centre as a leading African think tank on federalism and democratic studies.

The issues

Debates over Nigeria’s federal structure have intensified in recent years, with many stakeholders advocating constitutional reforms to devolve more powers to states, strengthen fiscal federalism and improve governance at the sub-national level.

What’s being said

Osaghae said Nigeria’s federal system requires a better balance of powers between the centre and the states, arguing that sustainable federalism depends on stronger sub-national autonomy and productive capacity.

Omoregie said the new Centre for Federalism and Democratic Studies would provide a platform for research and policy dialogue aimed at addressing governance challenges in Nigeria.

What’s next

The Centre for Federalism and Democratic Studies is expected to continue its annual lecture series and other research initiatives to stimulate policy discussions on constitutional reform, federalism and democratic governance.

Bottom line

Osaghae argues that strengthening Nigeria’s federation requires more than constitutional debate; it demands a better balance of powers and greater economic self-reliance for states to build a more sustainable federal system.

Expert says transparent metering can improve power sector revenue

Key points

  • Power expert says consumers are willing to pay electricity bills when metering is transparent and accurate.
  • He says poor metering continues to undermine revenue collection and worsen liquidity challenges in the power sector.
  • Q-Tech says its smart metering solutions improve billing transparency and revenue assurance for DisCos.

Main story

A power sector expert, Mr Ayotomiwa Adekahunsi, says consumers are more willing to pay for electricity when they are accurately and transparently metered.

Adekahunsi, Chief Executive Officer of Q-Tech Nigeria Limited, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said a survey conducted by the company showed that many electricity consumers were prepared to settle their bills once they had confidence in the accuracy and transparency of the metering system.

According to him, poor metering remains one of the major challenges confronting Nigeria’s electricity sector.

Adekahunsi said accurate metering was critical to securing revenue across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), where liquidity challenges continue to affect operators.

He noted that electricity generated, transmitted and distributed was often not paid for accurately, a situation he warned could threaten the sustainability of some industry players.

The power expert said improving metering would enable electricity distribution companies (DisCos) and the government to recover revenue more effectively while supporting improvements in electricity supply.

He disclosed that Q-Tech had already deployed smart meters to some DisCos, with a focus on government institutions and large corporate organisations.

According to him, these customer categories account for a significant portion of aggregate, technical and commercial losses within the electricity market.

He explained that the company’s smart metering platform combines intelligent meters with software and analytics tools to provide real-time visibility into electricity consumption, billing and payments.

Adekahunsi said the platform allows customers to monitor their daily and monthly electricity usage, making the billing process more transparent.

He added that increasing demand for smarter technologies reflected the evolving needs of Nigeria’s electricity sector for greater efficiency, accountability and transparency.

He said Q-Tech would continue expanding its expertise in intelligent metering, automation and conventional electrical engineering to help address the sector’s liquidity challenges.

The issues

Nigeria’s electricity sector continues to face significant liquidity challenges, partly driven by inadequate metering, revenue losses and disputes over estimated billing. Industry stakeholders have consistently identified smart metering as a key solution for improving revenue collection and consumer confidence.

What’s being said

Adekahunsi said consumers were willing to pay for electricity when billing was transparent and based on accurate metering.

He added that intelligent metering and data analytics would help DisCos secure revenue, reduce losses and improve accountability across the electricity value chain.

What’s next

Q-Tech plans to expand the deployment of its smart metering solutions to support revenue assurance, improve billing transparency and strengthen the financial sustainability of Nigeria’s electricity sector.

Bottom line

Accurate and transparent metering remains central to addressing the liquidity challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector, with improved billing systems expected to boost consumer confidence and strengthen revenue collection.

REA begins 13.9MW solar mini-grid project in Yobe

Key points

  • REA says Yobe will receive nearly 14MW of electricity through five interconnected hybrid solar mini-grids.
  • The project forms part of a $750 million programme to provide electricity to 17.5 million Nigerians.
  • Yobe says it has electrified over 450 rural communities and expanded renewable energy infrastructure.

Main story

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) says Yobe State will receive nearly 14 megawatts of clean electricity through five interconnected hybrid solar mini-grids as part of efforts to expand access to reliable power across the state.

Managing Director of the agency, Mr Abba Aliyu, disclosed this on Wednesday in Damaturu during the groundbreaking ceremony for the 13.92MW interconnected hybrid solar mini-grid project.

Aliyu said the project fulfilled a commitment made by the agency in June 2025 to make Yobe the renewable energy construction hub of Nigeria.

According to him, the project will inject about 14MW of clean, reliable and affordable electricity into the Yobe electricity distribution network.

He said the initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s $750 million programme approved by President Bola Tinubu to provide electricity to 17.5 million Nigerians through the deployment of 1,350 mini-grids nationwide.

Aliyu said Yobe was among the major beneficiaries of the programme.

He explained that, in addition to the five interconnected mini-grids, the project includes electricity distribution lines, more than 40 transformers, electricity poles and household metering across the benefiting communities.

The REA boss disclosed that the agency had also commenced 14 additional electrification projects in communities including Dapchi, Gogon Kuka, Malori, Tulmi, Zangaya, Falimaram, Jawur and Katama.

He attributed the progress to the support of Gov. Mai Mala Buni, particularly for facilitating land acquisition through the Yobe Geographic Information System (YOGIS), which he said accelerated project implementation.

Aliyu expressed confidence that the projects would be completed and inaugurated within six months.

Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Power, Alhaji Mamuda Gurara, said the project reflected the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding access to reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity.

He said the ministry was implementing reforms under the Electricity Act 2023, promoting renewable energy deployment and expanding off-grid electricity solutions through solar mini-grids and hybrid systems.

According to Gurara, the project will improve electricity supply to households, businesses and public institutions, reduce dependence on fossil fuel generators, lower energy costs and stimulate economic activities.

In his remarks, Gov. Buni said his administration had electrified more than 450 rural communities, restored electricity to areas affected by insurgency and connected Gulani and Yunusari Local Government Areas to the national grid after decades without public power supply.

He added that the state had installed more than 17,000 solar-powered streetlights, deployed solar hybrid systems in hospitals and public institutions, and upgraded electricity infrastructure across Yobe.

Buni said the new mini-grid project would provide reliable electricity to thousands of households, schools, hospitals, farms and businesses in Damaturu, Buni Yadi, Gashua and other benefiting communities.

He also announced that the state government had secured all project sites, paid compensation to affected landowners and issued Certificates of Occupancy to facilitate seamless implementation.

The issues

Nigeria is expanding off-grid renewable energy projects to bridge the country’s electricity access gap, particularly in underserved communities where grid infrastructure remains limited. Hybrid solar mini-grids have become a key component of the Federal Government’s rural electrification strategy.

What’s being said

Aliyu said the project would inject nearly 14MW of clean electricity into Yobe’s distribution network as part of a nationwide programme to provide electricity to 17.5 million Nigerians.

Buni said the state had already electrified more than 450 rural communities and was strengthening its regulatory framework to attract private investment into the electricity sector.

What’s next

REA expects the interconnected solar mini-grid project and the additional electrification projects underway in Yobe to be completed and commissioned within six months, expanding access to reliable electricity across the state.

Bottom line

The REA-Yobe partnership marks another step in Nigeria’s push to expand renewable energy, with the 13.92MW hybrid solar mini-grid project expected to improve electricity access, stimulate economic activities and reduce reliance on fossil fuel-powered generators.

EFCC says Osun account freeze meant to protect N11bn probe

Key points

  • EFCC says it froze Osun State Government’s account to prevent the alleged diversion of N11 billion under investigation.
  • The commission says the action is unrelated to the Aug. 15 governorship election.
  • EFCC says it is monitoring the finances of other states as part of ongoing accountability investigations.

Main story

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says its decision to freeze the Osun State Government’s bank account was aimed at preventing the alleged diversion of about N11 billion in public funds under investigation.

The commission explained on Wednesday in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Mr Dele Oyewale, that the action was unrelated to the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

According to the EFCC, it has been investigating the Osun State Government since March 2026 over the alleged fraudulent handling of Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds and allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

The commission said officials of the state government, including the Accountant General, had been questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.

Oyewale said the commission initially had no intention of placing a Post No Debit order on the account but acted after detecting what it described as suspicious movement of funds from Aug. 2.

According to him, investigators observed large transfers from the government’s accounts into various corporate entities, prompting the commission to freeze the accounts to prevent further transactions.

He said the EFCC has a statutory responsibility to safeguard public funds and could not ignore activities it considered capable of undermining that mandate.

The spokesperson maintained that the commission’s action should not be linked to the forthcoming governorship election, insisting that the agency would continue carrying out its legal responsibilities irrespective of political developments.

Oyewale also disclosed that the EFCC was monitoring the finances of other states, adding that several were under investigation as part of efforts to promote accountability and transparency in the management of public funds.

He urged Nigerians to disregard what he described as false narratives surrounding the commission’s actions.

The issues

The EFCC’s decision to freeze the Osun State Government’s account comes amid heightened political activities ahead of the state’s governorship election. While the commission says the move is part of an ongoing financial investigation, the action has generated political controversy over its timing.

What’s being said

Oyewale said the commission froze the account after detecting suspicious transfers of funds during an ongoing investigation into the alleged diversion of about N11 billion.

He maintained that the action was intended to protect public funds and had no connection with the forthcoming governorship election.

What’s next

The EFCC is expected to continue its investigation into the alleged financial misconduct, while the Osun State Government may respond further to the commission’s allegations as the election approaches.

Bottom line

The EFCC insists the freezing of the Osun State Government’s account is a law enforcement measure aimed at protecting public funds under investigation, not an action driven by electoral considerations.

Key points

  • AIICO Insurance reported an 18.9% increase in second-quarter profit after tax to N13.4 billion.
  • Insurance revenue rose 14.5%, while total assets grew 13.2% to N661 billion.
  • The company retained its composite insurance licence after meeting NAICOM’s recapitalisation requirements.

Main story

AIICO Insurance Plc has reported an 18.9 per cent increase in profit after tax to N13.4 billion for the second quarter ended June 30, 2026, from N11.3 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.

The company disclosed this in a statement released on Wednesday in Lagos, noting that it had also retained its composite operational licence after meeting the recapitalisation requirements of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) under the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025.

According to the company, insurance revenue rose by 14.5 per cent to N74.9 billion from N65.4 billion in the corresponding period of 2025, while gross written premium stood at N104 billion.

AIICO said total assets increased by 13.2 per cent to N661 billion from N584 billion at the end of the 2025 financial year.

The company attributed the improved performance to stronger underwriting capacity, growth across its key business segments and sustained customer confidence.

It also announced that it had received a new operational licence from NAICOM following the successful completion of the insurance industry’s 12-month recapitalisation exercise.

According to the company, NAICOM listed AIICO among insurers that met the new minimum capital requirement, enabling it to retain its composite licence for both life and general insurance businesses.

It added that it achieved the recapitalisation threshold without raising additional capital, having maintained capital above the revised regulatory minimum before the exercise.

Managing Director of AIICO Insurance Plc, Mr Babatunde Fajemirokun, said the strengthened capital position would enhance the company’s ability to underwrite larger risks, settle claims promptly and continue delivering quality insurance services.

He added that the milestone reflected the company’s commitment to regulatory compliance, financial strength, sound corporate governance and long-term sustainability.

Fajemirokun also thanked customers for their continued loyalty and confidence, describing their support as a key driver of the company’s sustained growth.

The issues

Nigeria’s insurance industry recently completed a recapitalisation exercise under the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025, requiring operators to strengthen their capital base. Companies that met the new requirements are expected to have greater underwriting capacity and stronger financial resilience.

What’s being said

Fajemirokun said the company’s strengthened capital position would enable it to underwrite larger risks, meet claims obligations promptly and sustain long-term growth while maintaining strong corporate governance and regulatory compliance.

What’s next

AIICO is expected to leverage its stronger capital base to expand underwriting capacity, grow its insurance portfolio and strengthen its position in Nigeria’s insurance market.

Bottom line

AIICO combined stronger earnings with regulatory compliance in the second quarter, positioning the insurer to take on larger risks and pursue future growth under the industry’s new capital requirements.

UN warns Islamic State remains major security threat in Africa

Key points

  • The United Nations says Islamic State remains a serious threat in the Sahel, Lake Chad Basin and parts of Central Africa.
  • ISWAP has been identified as the most active Islamic State affiliate globally.
  • The UN warns that terrorist groups are increasingly using AI, encrypted communications, drones and virtual assets.

Main story

The United Nations has warned that the Islamic State (ISIL/Da’esh) and its affiliates remain a serious threat to peace and security in Africa, particularly in the Sahel, the Lake Chad Basin and parts of Central Africa.

Senior UN counter-terrorism officials issued the warning on Wednesday while briefing the Security Council on the activities of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant and global efforts to combat the group.

Oguljeren Niyazberdiyeva, Chief of the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism, said Africa currently bears the heaviest burden of the threat posed by ISIL and its affiliates.

She identified the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) as the most active ISIL affiliate in the world.

According to her, although sustained counter-terrorism operations have disrupted the group’s senior leadership and weakened its ability to coordinate attacks from a central command, the organisation has adapted by operating through decentralised networks linked by a common extremist ideology.

Niyazberdiyeva warned that terrorist groups are increasingly exploiting emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, encrypted communications, virtual assets and drones, to recruit members, mobilise resources and plan attacks across borders.

She also said the group continues to exploit weak governance, poverty, political instability, armed conflict and fragile security institutions in affected countries.

The UN official called for stronger international cooperation and practical measures to prevent ISIL and its splinter groups from regaining strength.

Several Security Council members stressed the need for increased support for African countries confronting terrorism.

Representatives of Somalia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Liberia warned that terrorist organisations are expanding their influence and that sub-Saharan Africa now accounts for more than half of global terrorism fatalities.

Council members also raised concerns about foreign terrorist fighters, online radicalisation, organised crime and the rapid evolution of technologies that are outpacing current counter-terrorism responses.

The council emphasised that defeating terrorism would require not only military action but also political, economic and social measures tailored to the realities facing affected communities.

The issues

The UN says terrorist groups are adapting faster than many national and international responses, particularly through decentralised operations and the use of emerging technologies. Weak governance, poverty and instability continue to create conditions that allow extremist groups to expand across parts of Africa.

What’s being said

“In spite of international efforts, Da’esh continues to pose a serious threat to international peace and security.” — Oguljeren Niyazberdiyeva, UN counter-terrorism official.

“While sustained counter-terrorism operations have disrupted Da’esh’s senior leadership, the group has continued to adapt.” — Oguljeren Niyazberdiyeva.

“A threat that adapts faster than our response will inevitably expand to consume all of us.” — Lewis Brown, Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the UN.

What’s next

The UN is expected to continue supporting member states through counter-terrorism assistance, while African countries seek greater international cooperation, intelligence sharing and operational support to contain the spread of extremist groups.

Bottom line

The UN says Islamic State remains a resilient and evolving threat in Africa, with the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin emerging as key hotspots where stronger security, governance and international cooperation will be critical to preventing further expansion.

WHO unveils global research roadmap on climate, health and migration

Key points

  • WHO has launched a global research prioritisation and action plan on health, migration and displacement.
  • The initiative seeks to close evidence gaps on the health impacts of climate-related migration.
  • More than 300 participants from over 75 countries contributed to developing the research roadmap.

Main story

The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a Global Research Prioritisation Exercise (GRPE) and action roadmap aimed at strengthening evidence on the links between climate change, migration, displacement and health.

The initiative, unveiled on Wednesday by WHO Health and Migration in collaboration with WHO Climate Change, Energy and Air Quality, brought together more than 300 participants from over 75 countries to address one of the world’s most under-researched public health challenges.

According to WHO, significant evidence gaps remain on how climate-related migration affects health, well-being and access to healthcare, despite increasing recognition of the relationship between climate change, human mobility and health outcomes.

The organisation said climate change is contributing to migration and displacement, particularly among vulnerable populations with limited capacity to adapt, while also influencing health risks and access to essential services throughout the migration journey.

WHO said the research exercise followed a structured process that included a scoping review, stakeholder mapping, technical consultations and an online prioritisation survey involving 59 experts from academia, policy and practice.

The exercise identified priority research areas under three core themes—social determinants of health, universal health coverage and emergencies—alongside cross-cutting issues covering health outcomes, data, policy and interventions.

Key research priorities include addressing social inequalities, strengthening access to health services, improving preparedness for climate-related emergencies, enhancing migration-sensitive data systems, and generating evidence on mental health, maternal and child health, chronic diseases and the long-term health effects of climate-related mobility.

WHO said the roadmap would guide future research, policy development and practical interventions while supporting the development of climate-resilient and migrant-inclusive health systems.

The issues

Climate change is increasingly driving migration and displacement, but research on its health implications remains limited. Closing these evidence gaps is expected to help governments develop policies that improve healthcare access and strengthen resilience among migrant and displaced populations.

What’s being said

“Closing research gaps is a matter of equity. To achieve universal health coverage, strengthening climate resilience and advancing health equity, migrant and displaced populations must not be an afterthought; they must be part of the solution from the beginning.” — Dr Santino Severoni, Head of WHO Health and Migration.

“Climate change is already affecting the health and mobility of populations around the world. Strengthening the evidence base is essential to inform effective policies and ensure that those most affected are protected through climate-resilient and equitable health systems.” — Dr Diarmid Campbell-Lendrum, Head of WHO Climate Change, Energy and Air Quality.

What’s next

WHO plans to work with member states and partners to embed the research roadmap into regional and national health agendas, strengthen partnerships, build research capacity and promote evidence-based policies for migrant and displaced populations.

Bottom line

WHO’s new research roadmap aims to strengthen global evidence on the health impacts of climate-related migration, providing governments with a foundation for more inclusive, resilient and equitable health systems.

Police to deploy 15,000 personnel for Osun governorship election

Key points

  • Police will deploy 15,000 personnel for the Aug. 15 Osun governorship election.
  • A DIG and an AIG will supervise election security operations in the state.
  • Police warn electoral offenders will be arrested and prosecuted regardless of political affiliation.

Main story

The Nigeria Police Force says it will deploy 15,000 personnel to provide security for the Aug. 15 governorship election in Osun State.

The Commissioner of Police in charge of the election, Mr Samuel Etaifo, disclosed this on Wednesday at a news conference in Osogbo, saying a Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) and an Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) would also oversee election security operations.

Etaifo said he was deployed to Osun two weeks before the election after the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, assessed the state’s security situation and observed rising political tension.

He said the Inspector-General subsequently deployed 16 units of the Mobile Police Force to restore calm and create a peaceful environment ahead of the poll.

According to Etaifo, the police have been mandated to reassure residents, maintain law and order and strengthen public confidence before election day.

He warned that anyone found violating electoral laws, irrespective of political status or party affiliation, would be arrested and transferred to Abuja for prosecution.

Etaifo expressed confidence that the security arrangements already in place, combined with measures implemented over recent months, would ensure a peaceful and credible election.

He also appealed to residents, political parties and other stakeholders to cooperate with security agencies to support a violence-free electoral process.

The issues

Security remains a critical factor in Nigeria’s off-cycle governorship elections. Early deployment of personnel and senior police officers is aimed at preventing political violence, reassuring voters and ensuring compliance with electoral laws.

What’s being said

“We are to clear and prepare the ground for a peaceful, tension-free and successful election. We are also to assure the people of the state of their security and boost their confidence in the ability of the police ahead of the election.” — Mr Samuel Etaifo, Commissioner of Police for the Osun governorship election.

“Anyone who violates the electoral law, irrespective of status or political party affiliation, will be arrested and taken to Abuja for prosecution.” — Mr Samuel Etaifo.

What’s next

Police will continue pre-election security operations before deploying 15,000 personnel across the state on election day under the supervision of senior police officers.

Bottom line

The Nigeria Police Force says it has put extensive security measures in place to ensure a peaceful, orderly and credible governorship election in Osun State.

Equities investors gain ₦71 billion as Nigerian stock market rebounds

NGX Records N60bn Trading

By Boluwatife Oshadiya | August 6, 2026

Key Points

  • Nigerian equities market added ₦70.62 billion as the All-Share Index rose 0.04%
  • Bargain hunting in FIRSTHOLDCO, FCMB, Nestlé and McNichols lifted the market
  • Trading activity weakened sharply despite the market’s positive close

Main Story

Equities investors gained approximately ₦70.62 billion on Wednesday after the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) reversed the previous session’s losses, with renewed buying interest in selected banking and consumer stocks pushing the market modestly higher.

The NGX All-Share Index (ASI) advanced by 109.41 points, or 0.04%, to close at 244,912.24, while total market capitalisation increased to ₦158.09 trillion.

The market’s recovery was driven by bargain hunting in medium- and large-cap stocks, including FIRSTHOLDCO, FCMB, Nestlé Nigeria and McNichols, helping offset losses recorded across several other counters.

Despite the positive close, overall market activity slowed considerably. Trading volume declined 47.25%, while transaction value fell 11.34% compared with the previous trading session. Investors exchanged 824.06 million shares valued at ₦25.47 billion across 48,114 deals.

FCMB emerged as the most actively traded stock by volume, accounting for 44.88% of all shares exchanged, followed by CHAMS, FIRSTHOLDCO, ACCESSCORP and LINKASSURE. FIRSTHOLDCO also dominated the value chart, contributing 22.37% of total transaction value.

On the gainers’ table, LINKASSURE appreciated 9.94%, followed by AVACAP (9.55%), FTGINSURE (7.69%), MCNICHOLS (7.34%), WAPIC (5.51%) and FIRSTHOLDCO (5.38%).

However, bearish sentiment remained evident as 29 stocks declined, compared with 20 gainers. HONYFLOUR and PZ led the losers’ chart after both shed 9.94%, followed by ZICHY, LEARNAFRCA, NEIMETH, AFRIPRUD and LEGENDINT.

Sector performance was mixed. Banking and Insurance indices gained 0.69% each, while Consumer Goods and Oil & Gas fell 0.41% and 0.005%, respectively. The Industrial Goods index closed flat.

What’s Being Said

“The market recorded a modest rebound following bargain hunting in selected medium- and large-cap stocks despite weaker trading activity,” according to the Nigerian Exchange trading data.

What’s Next

  • Investors are expected to monitor whether buying interest in banking stocks can sustain the market’s recovery.
  • Attention will remain on upcoming corporate earnings releases and dividend announcements.
  • Analysts will also watch macroeconomic developments that could influence investor sentiment.

The Bottom Line: Wednesday’s rebound suggests investors remain willing to accumulate fundamentally strong stocks after recent declines. However, weaker trading volumes indicate market conviction remains cautious, with sustained gains likely to depend on stronger corporate earnings and broader economic signals.

Nigeria’s economy expands 3.87% in 2025, says CBN

By Boluwatife Oshadiya| August 6, 2026

Key Points

  • Nigeria’s economy grew by 3.87% in 2025, up from 3.38% in 2024
  • Headline inflation declined sharply to 15.15% in December 2025
  • CBN attributed the improvement to economic reforms, tighter monetary policy and stronger fiscal performance

Main Story

Nigeria’s economy expanded by 3.87% in 2025, compared with 3.38% recorded in 2024, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in its 2025 Annual Report, as reforms across key sectors supported stronger economic activity.

The apex bank also reported that headline inflation fell to 15.15% in December 2025, from 34.80% a year earlier, citing tighter monetary policy, improved exchange rate stability and changes to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) methodology.

According to the report, economic growth was broad-based, reflecting continued implementation of structural reforms and the rebasing of Nigeria’s economy to capture emerging sectors.

The CBN said federation revenue increased 33.67%, driven by stronger oil and non-oil earnings, leading to improved allocations to the three tiers of government and supporting fiscal sustainability.

Tax revenue also strengthened, with Nigeria’s tax-to-GDP ratio rising to 7.15% from 5.41% in 2024, supported by higher collections from petroleum profit tax, value-added tax and corporate income tax.

Public debt stood at ₦153.29 trillion, representing 35.55% of GDP as of September 2025. The CBN noted that the figure remains below Nigeria’s statutory debt ceiling of 60% of GDP and below the 70% threshold recommended for Market Access Countries.

On the global outlook, the report said world economic growth remained stable at 3.30% in 2025 despite geopolitical uncertainties. Inflation moderated globally as energy and food prices eased, prompting many central banks to begin lowering interest rates.

The CBN also noted that the average price of Bonny Light crude declined to $70.93 per barrel from $82.56 per barrel in 2024 due to oversupply in the international oil market.

What’s Being Said

“Broad-based growth followed gains from the continuing implementation of reforms in key sectors and the rebasing of the economy to accommodate emerging subsectors,” the Central Bank of Nigeria said in its 2025 Annual Report.

What’s Next

  • Investors and policymakers will monitor whether the lower inflation trend is sustained through 2026.
  • The CBN is expected to continue balancing price stability with economic growth in future monetary policy decisions.
  • Markets will also watch fiscal performance and debt sustainability as the government implements ongoing economic reforms.

The Bottom Line: The CBN’s latest report points to improving macroeconomic conditions after a challenging period marked by high inflation and policy adjustments. Sustaining this momentum will depend on whether reforms continue translating into stronger private sector investment, stable prices and inclusive economic growth.

Delta health insurance enrolment nears 3 million, targets universal coverage

Summitech Commits To Digitisation Of Health Records

Key points

  • Delta says its health insurance scheme has enrolled nearly three million residents across the state.
  • The commission says digital technology and AI helped eliminate fraud, saving N2.1bn in 2025.
  • Delta targets 4.7 million enrollees by 2027 and universal health coverage by 2031.

Main story

The Director-General of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission (DSCHC), Dr Isaac Akpoveta, says the state’s health insurance scheme has enrolled nearly three million residents, positioning Delta as Nigeria’s leading state in health insurance coverage.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit in Asaba on Wednesday, Akpoveta said health insurance had become a key driver of investment by providing healthcare coverage for investors, their employees and host communities.

He said the commission had enrolled more than 2.95 million residents and accredited 533 healthcare facilities across Delta’s 25 local government areas, with enrolment expected to surpass three million by the end of the week.

According to him, the state has deployed facial biometric verification, artificial intelligence and real-time monitoring systems to strengthen accountability, improve service delivery and eliminate fraud.

Akpoveta disclosed that the commission saved N2.1 billion in 2025 by eliminating ghost enrollees, fraudulent claims and irregular payments through its fully digital claims processing system.

He attributed the scheme’s success to strong political support from the Delta State Government, noting that the administration funds healthcare for pregnant women, children under five and elderly residents aged 65 years and above.

Akpoveta projected that enrolment would increase to 4.7 million by 2027, while expressing confidence that Delta would achieve universal health coverage before the end of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration in 2031.

He explained that although federal workers in the state are covered under the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Delta remains on track to register at least 80 per cent of its residents under the state scheme.

Akpoveta said wider health insurance coverage would improve public health, boost productivity and make the state more attractive to investors by ensuring a healthier workforce.

The issues

Nigeria continues to pursue universal health coverage, but enrolment remains uneven across states. Digital health insurance systems are increasingly being adopted to improve efficiency, reduce fraud and expand access to healthcare while supporting economic productivity.

What’s being said

“With our AI-driven ICT system… ghost enrollees, fraudulent billings and irregular payments have disappeared. In 2025 alone, we saved N2.1 billion from fraud.” — Dr Isaac Akpoveta, Director-General, Delta State Contributory Health Commission.

“Health insurance is a catalyst for investors because when you invest in a health insurance-compliant state, the people are generally healthy.” — Dr Isaac Akpoveta.

What’s next

The commission will continue statewide enrolment through its 533 accredited healthcare facilities, with the goal of reaching 4.7 million enrollees by 2027 and achieving universal health coverage by 2031.

Bottom line

Delta is relying on digital health insurance, expanded coverage and sustained public funding to improve healthcare access, reduce fraud and strengthen the state’s attractiveness to investors.
