The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says its decision to freeze the Osun State Government’s bank account was aimed at preventing the alleged diversion of about N11 billion in public funds under investigation.
The commission explained on Wednesday in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Mr Dele Oyewale, that the action was unrelated to the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
According to the EFCC, it has been investigating the Osun State Government since March 2026 over the alleged fraudulent handling of Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds and allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).
The commission said officials of the state government, including the Accountant General, had been questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
Oyewale said the commission initially had no intention of placing a Post No Debit order on the account but acted after detecting what it described as suspicious movement of funds from Aug. 2.
According to him, investigators observed large transfers from the government’s accounts into various corporate entities, prompting the commission to freeze the accounts to prevent further transactions.
He said the EFCC has a statutory responsibility to safeguard public funds and could not ignore activities it considered capable of undermining that mandate.
The spokesperson maintained that the commission’s action should not be linked to the forthcoming governorship election, insisting that the agency would continue carrying out its legal responsibilities irrespective of political developments.
Oyewale also disclosed that the EFCC was monitoring the finances of other states, adding that several were under investigation as part of efforts to promote accountability and transparency in the management of public funds.
He urged Nigerians to disregard what he described as false narratives surrounding the commission’s actions.
