INEC Lays Roadmap For 2019 Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has inaugurated a 15-member committee to develop road maps for its operations from 2017 to 2021.

Members of the committee, according to the commission’s daily bulletin issued on Thursday in Abuja, are Mr Abdullahi Kaugama, Olusegun Agbaje, Prof. Bolade Eyinla and Okechukwu Ndeche, who will serve as Secretary.

Other members are Prof. Mohammed Kuna, Chima Duruaku, Paschal Ukaenwe, Omolaja T. Soyeolu, Dr Otive Igbuzot, Dr Peter Mba and David Asemo.

Chidi Nwafor, Mrs Blessing Obidiegwu and Kola Oyelami are also members.

It said that the committee would review the commission’s 2012-2016 Strategic Plan and set targets for the next four years.

“The Strategic Plan Review Committee (SPRC), headed by Dr Mohammed Lecky, INEC National Commissioner, has begun work in earnest since it was inaugurated on Sept. 15 at the commission’s headquarters.’’

It stated that the committee’s terms of reference was to undertake a comprehensive audit of the 2012-2016 Strategic Plan and Plan of Action with budgetary alignment.

“The committee is to also evaluate strategic issues emanating from the implementation of the 2015 election activities.

“It will also assess the impact of the 2012-2016 Strategic Plan of Action on the processes, actions and outcomes of the 2015 General Elections based on pre-election day and post-election reviews and reports.

“It will identify threats, weaknesses, gaps, unfinished businesses, opportunities and innovations within the context of current electoral realities and assess their effect on the performance of the commission.

“The committee will produce draft copies of the finding of the review report on the 2012-2016 Strategic Plan with key recommendations,’’ it said.

The committee has 30 days to conclude the exercise.

INEC had faced serious challenge registering candidates of some political parties especially the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the build-up to elections conducted this year and the ones scheduled to hold later in the year.
