The Project Director of Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS), which is under the Federal Ministry of Finance, Dennis Chukwu has revealed no fewer than 41,161 graduates have benefited from the scheme since inception and over 35,000 have exited the scheme, with thousands of them having secured jobs.
While speaking at the GIS career development and entrepreneurship skills training in Benin City, Edo State, he said since inception the scheme had demonstrated high prospects for job creation and social protection of the youths. He noted that in view of its prospect for skills building and job creation; it has developed special programmes for the non-oil sector.
“GIS has entered into special partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organisations to have graduates trained, mentored and supported in areas such as non-oil export trade, ICT, agriculture, community health, construction, financial inclusion, amongst other,” he said.
Chukwu pledged government’s determination to achieve the goal of the scheme, which he said is for unemployed graduates to acquire employable skills, “as long as thousands of graduate still remain unemployed, we will continue to improve the capacity of the scheme to absorb more applicants.”
According to him, the training is an opportunity for graduate interns to gain employment in organisations where they worked, as well as others, or to be self employed.
