Nasarawa Assembly Suspends Six Lawmakers

The crisis in Nasarawa’s State House of Assembly deepened as the six lawmakers that engaged in a Free-for-All fight were suspended indefinitely on Tuesday.

Remarkably, yesterday’s session held in spite of Monday’s resolution to put off the house proceedings indefinitely.

The six legislators suspended were: Abubakar Kana, APC- Kokona West; Kassim Kassim, APC-Akwanga South; Mohammed Okpoku, APC- Udega/Loko; Makpa Malla, APC-Wamba; Musa Ali, APC-Keffi East; and Murtala Sodangi, APC-Nasarawa Central.

All six lawmakers, members of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress, APC, both at the state and national levels were alleged to be in the forefront of a campaign to stop the Governor’s unilateral appointment of sole administrators for the 11 local councils.

Their opposition first formally expressed during a closed door session of the house flowed into plenary session on Monday after which they went physical to prevent moves to suspend them on account of their disposition towards the governor’s attitude.

This resulted in a free for all that culminated in the decision to suspend them indefinitely.

However, yesterday’s invitation of the six legislators by the Department of State Services, DSS paved way for the remaining legislators to effect the suspension plan based on the motion of majority leader, Tanko Tunga, accusing them of misconduct and actions that brought the house into disrepute.

The motion was supported by minority leader, Muhammed Alkali and passed by 14 other members present. The Deputy Speaker presided over the session..
