Manchester United Eyes £40 Million Andre Onana As David De Gea’s Replacement

Andre Onana

Manchester United have targeted Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana as a replacement for David De Gea should the Spaniard decide to leave this summer.

The current Red Devils goalkeeper is in the final year of his current contract and has rebuffed an improved offer to remain at Manchester United beyond 2020.

The club’s philosophy had been to allow De Gea to leave for free when his contract expires, but a turbulent end to the season has encouraged directors to consider offloading the shot-stopper.

According to The Sun, United have been impressed by Onana’s season, with the 23 year-old leading Ajax to the Champions League semi-final.

The Cameroon international is valued at around £40 million by the Red Devils and is seen as a prudent investment.

Onana in kept 20 clean sheets in 46 Ajax appearances in the 2018-19 campaign.

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak has expressed his desire to move to Old Trafford, with the fact that the Red Devils won’t be in the Champions League next season not a concern.

Oblak signed a contract extension with Atletico in April, with his deal running until the summer of 2023.

However, United could still press ahead in their attempt to sign Oblak, with uncertainty remaining over De Gea’s future.

Last season Oblak kept 20 clean sheets in 37 La Liga appearances, with Atletico finishing in second place behind Barcelona, However Onana is seen as the more affordable option.
