FG To Shut Down Third Mainland Bridge For 6 Months Over Repairs

The Federal Government has approved an increase in the contract amount for the old Enugu-Anambra road project as well as a total of N23.33 billion for surface maintenance of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State.

After this week’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday, Babatunde Fashola, the minister of works and housing, briefed State House reporters. He said the 24-month repair would cover 11 kilometers, including interchanges, ramps, and crucial links.

The President, Muhammadu Buhari  issued Executive Order 11 in April 2022, which gave the nation’s national maintenance policy legal backing. He claimed that the action is in line with that order.

The announcement was made just two weeks after the Lagos State Government announced that the 32-year-old bridge would be renovated to repair the substructure and failed and peeled asphaltic sections.

Fashola countered that there wouldn’t be any overlap in efforts.

According to the former governor of Lagos State, the FG will handle surface maintenance to repair potholes and replace missing guard rails while the state’s Public Works Corporation will concentrate on the bridge’s functional structure, such as the underwater piles.

In his words, “Council approved a new contract for the upkeep of the pavement of the third mainland bridge and this was approved in the sum of N6.28bn for 24 months.

“People have previously questioned me about the bridge’s construction. The substructure of the bridge, the underwater piles, the pile caps, and the replacement of the expansion joints and bearings are the main areas of focus of the work.

This bridge’s structural integrity depends on these maintenance tasks. The situation we’re in now is different. Both the driving surface and the aesthetics are involved. Several of the rails were stolen. At the entrances and exits to the bridge, some of the pleats are out of place.

There aren’t any expected lengthy closures throughout the construction, according to Fashola.

The Council also approved a N17.05 billion variation to the contract for the old Enugu-Onitsha road’s construction, bringing the total cost up to N48.99 billion.
