The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) opened the week higher on Monday as the market capitalisation rose by ₦1.91 trillion to ₦160.42 trillion, supported by buying interest in major stocks.
NGX market data showed that the All-Share Index (ASI) gained 1.21% to close at 248,529.75 points, taking its year-to-date return to 59.71%.
Despite the rise in the benchmark index, overall trading activity weakened. Total volume traded fell 48.16% to 787.1 million units, while transaction value declined 4.36% to ₦25.5 billion.
FTGINSURE accounted for the largest share of market volume, with 307.3 million units traded, representing 39.05% of total volume. FIRSTHOLDCO led by value, recording trades worth ₦5.1 billion, equivalent to 20.08% of total market value traded.
Market breadth remained bearish despite the headline gain, with 36 stocks declining against 23 gainers. FTGINSURE emerged as the session’s best-performing stock, rising 10.00%, while AVACAP recorded the largest decline at 10.00%.

What’s Being Said
No direct stakeholder or analyst quote was included in the source material. A verified comment from the NGX, a market operator or an independent analyst should be added before publication to provide market interpretation.
What’s Next
Investors will watch whether the NGX can sustain the latest upward move after the market opened the week with a 1.21% gain.
Attention will also remain on market breadth and trading activity, particularly whether participation broadens beyond the stocks that drove Monday’s index performance.
Bottom Line
The Bottom Line: Monday’s ₦1.91 trillion increase in market capitalisation shows continued strength in the headline NGX indicators, but the weaker trading activity and negative market breadth point to a rally that was not broadly based.
