Livespot Digitech hosted the inaugural edition of UNCODE, an experiential tech-centred and lifestyle event at the Alliance Française on Monday, September 2nd, 2019. The event was attended by tech buffs, developers and tech startups. The event was anchored by Nigerian music artist Dare Art-Alade.
To discuss the day’s theme on Culture and Technology were Ire Aderinokun, co-founder of BuyCoins, Nedayar Enegesi, Co-founder at Andela, Yvonne Alozie Director at GIT Girl, others are Segun Adeniyi Aderinokun, Head at Africa Fintech Foundry and Software Engineer and Cultural Architect Iddris Sandu.
The panel discussed the mutual influence of culture and technology on each other. Speaking on the theme, Yvonne Alozie shared insightS from her professional viewpoint, she stated “what I do is battle mindsets. If we can start talking about why there are not many women in tech.
That is a very cultural problem. What I do on a daily basis is constantly creating my theory of change, and asking how can we use technology to influence the way people are thinking about women in tech.
How can we use technology to tell women they can build an amazing career in tech? How can we tell men they can use technology to encourage more women to be in tech? In a very broad sense, I think technology has brought us really far. Technology is the reason why we are progressive, it is also the reason why our culture is progressive.”
Also, the panel discussed issues on gender imbalance in the tech space, skewed in favour of men. Citing reasons such as societal stereotypes that discourages women from getting into tech-related careers to skill gap in the empowerment of women.
The panelists called for improved opportunities for women acquisition of knowledge in tech and mind shift from stereotypes that limits women from entry into the tech space.
The event held pitch sessions for various tech startups. Upnepa, an electricity tracking startup based in Ondo State, Paytent, a financial transparency solution and Studomia, an educational platform.
