Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Muhammad Bello has called on families in the FCT to totally comply with the immunisation exercise to end the menace of poliomyelitis in the territory.
Speaking when he flagged off the sub-national immunisation plus days in Guragu settlement in Karamajiji community of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bello, represented by the permanent secretary, Dr. Babatope Ajakaiye explained that the exercise was aimed at vaccinating children from birth to 56 months, against poliomyelitis.
He also stated that the aim was equally to serve as a booster for children already vaccinated, and as an opportunity to reach those children who missed the previous rounds of immunisation exercise in the territory.
While advising Nigerians to always keep their surroundings clean, Candido noted that the declining sanitary conditions of the environment were responsible for the continued prevalence of polio in Nigeria.
The executive secretary, FCT Primary Health Care Board, Dr Rilwanu Mohammed said the selection of Guragu settlement for the Flagg-off was due to the high risk of the area. He added that over 6,000 people are resident in the area, while the community also has two Internally Displaced persons (IDPs) camps.
