Nigeria’s broadband is set to increase from 24 to 30 percent by 2018, the Executive Vice Chairman of Nigeria Communications Commission, NCC, Prof Umar Danbatta, gave the assurance.

Danbatta, who spoke during the Nigeria mobile economy summit and expo in Lagos, last week, said increased broadband width is needed to drive the mobile economy.

To achieve this, he said, “We are in liaison with infrastructure companies, those are the companies that will drive broadband for Nigeria. We are using the open access model to encourage companies to deploy broadband to Nigeria.

We can’t do much on the Internet without broadband so we are trying to increase the deployment of broadband so Nigerians can enjoy mobile economy, mobile money and e-commerce.

“We are also talking to the mobile operators, state governments and other stakeholders on the need to drive and develop Information And Communications Technology (ICT) in Nigeria for the benefit of all.

”We have signed MOU with security organisations to reduce the vandalisation of telecommunications equipment. With that, we are sure we will surpass the 30 percent in 2018.”
