Main Story

The Federal Government has confirmed an imported case of Ebola virus disease in the Federal Capital Territory. Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, announced this at a media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, saying the case was confirmed by laboratory testing.

According to Pate, the patient is a woman with a recent travel history to East Africa, particularly Uganda. She returned to Nigeria with symptoms on October 7, and her condition progressed four days later before tests confirmed the infection. A government statement said she arrived on an international flight from Uganda and was admitted to a private hospital, where she received care for several days before the diagnosis was confirmed. “She is currently in isolation and receiving medical care,” the statement said.

Contact tracing has begun, with 44 contacts already identified, while surveillance is being strengthened at the country’s entry points. Pate said the Ministry of Health, the FCT Health Secretariat, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and other partners are working together to contain the infection and prevent further spread.

The Issues

The case shows how quickly an outbreak elsewhere on the continent can reach Nigeria through international travel. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention had warned that the detection of a case in Kenya underscored the risk of importation through travel and population movement, including into Nigeria.

One concern is the delay in diagnosis. The patient received care at a private hospital for several days before Ebola was confirmed, which raises questions about how quickly health facilities recognise suspected cases. This is likely why Pate urged public and private facilities to stay on high alert and keep a high index of suspicion, Contact tracing is the other pressure point. With 44 contacts identified, including those who may have been exposed at the hospital, how effectively they are traced and monitored will largely determine whether the infection spreads.

What’s Being Said

Pate urged Nigerians to remain calm and vigilant, advising the public to practise good hygiene, watch for symptoms including fever, weakness, headache and diarrhoea, and cooperate with public health officials. He maintained that the situation is being managed, and the government pledged timely and transparent updates.

He said the government is drawing on Nigeria’s experience in containing the 2014 Ebola outbreak and the public health mechanisms built since then, adding that all identified contacts are being traced and monitored, The NCDC had earlier said that as of October 6, 2026, there was no confirmed case of Ebola disease in Nigeria. That position has now changed with Tuesday’s confirmation.

What’s Next

Attention will turn to the progress of contact tracing and monitoring of the 44 identified contacts, and whether any further cases are confirmed. Surveillance at airports and other entry points is expected to tighten, Health facilities across the country are expected to remain on high alert, and the government has promised regular updates as containment efforts continue.

Bottom Line

Nigeria has recorded an imported Ebola case in the FCT, and with the patient isolated and 44 contacts being traced, the government is leaning on its 2014 experience to contain the virus while urging the public to stay calm and vigilant.
