Main Story

The Federal Government has confirmed one case of Ebola disease in Abuja after laboratory tests returned positive, with health authorities identifying 44 close contacts and beginning tracing operations on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, said the patient is a woman who recently arrived in Nigeria on an international flight from Uganda. She was admitted to a private hospital in the FCT, where she received treatment for several days before the diagnosis was confirmed, according to a statement reported by PUNCH.

The woman is currently in isolation and receiving medical care. The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), and the FCT Health Services Secretariat are coordinating the response.

“She is in isolation, and she is receiving quality medical care. Contact tracing has been conducted, and it’s under way as we speak, with 44 contacts already identified,” Pate told the Nigerian Television Authority, according to Reuters.

Public health teams are tracing identified contacts and monitoring people who may have been exposed, including healthcare workers, patients, caregivers and travel contacts. Authorities have also intensified surveillance and are supporting the hospital where the patient received treatment to strengthen infection prevention and control measures.

The government has directed public and private healthcare facilities nationwide to remain on high alert, promptly isolate suspected cases and report them to public health authorities. Nigerians have been advised to maintain hand hygiene and avoid contact with the blood and other body fluids of people suspected of having Ebola.

The confirmation follows an October 6 NCDC advisory that raised concerns about the risk of importing Ebola into Nigeria after a case linked to the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was confirmed in Kenya. Nigeria had previously strengthened its preparedness through surveillance, laboratory diagnosis, isolation protocols and contact-tracing arrangements.

What’s Being Said

The Federal Government says coordinated contact tracing, surveillance and infection-control measures are underway to contain the infection. Pate has also urged the public to cooperate with health authorities.

Independent expert commentary on the confirmed Nigerian case was not available in the reports reviewed for this brief.

What’s Next

  • Contact tracing: Health teams will continue monitoring identified contacts and investigating possible exposures.
  • Healthcare surveillance: Hospitals and other health facilities have been directed to maintain heightened vigilance and report suspected infections promptly.
  • Public updates: The government says investigations are ongoing, with the NCDC and the Presidential Task Force on Ebola Virus Disease expected to provide further updates as information is confirmed.

Members of the public can contact the NCDC’s toll-free call centre on 6232, available 24 hours a day, for information or to report a suspected case.

Bottom Line

The Bottom Line: The immediate priority is to identify and monitor everyone who may have been exposed before further transmission occurs. The effectiveness of Nigeria’s response will depend on timely contact tracing, strict infection-control procedures and public cooperation, rather than on the confirmation of a single case alone.
