Interior Minister Orders NIS To Clear Backlog In 2weeks

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has officially confirmed that the automation process for passport applications in Nigeria will commence on January 8, 2024.

This significant development comes after the minister’s announcement in December, where he revealed the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing a fully automated system for passport applications.

During an inspection of the facilities at the Nigeria Immigration Service in Abuja on Monday, the minister, alongside the Comptroller General of the Service, Wura-Ola Adepoju, affirmed that the automation process would enable Nigerians to complete their passport applications online without the need for human contact.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized the progress made in the automation initiative, stating, “We are good to go live. We are starting the training, and on January 8, the solution will be live and direct for Nigerians to have a good feel, a sweet experience based on the Renewed Hope of Mr President.”

The minister highlighted the comprehensive nature of the automated application system, which includes the ability to upload passport photos and supporting documents seamlessly. The introduction of this digital solution aims to streamline and enhance the passport application process, offering citizens a convenient and efficient way to apply for passports without physical interactions.

Tunji-Ojo further emphasized the reduction of human contact in the passport acquisition process, aligning with the government’s commitment to modernize and improve service delivery in various sectors. With the implementation of the automated passport application system, Nigerians can anticipate a smoother and more accessible experience, reflecting the government’s Renewed Hope initiative.

As the training process commences, the government prepares for the official launch of the automation solution on January 8, marking a significant step toward a more technologically advanced and citizen-friendly passport application process in Nigeria.
