Telcos Pay N9bn Royalties To Artistes

During the fourth edition of the Nigerian Entertainment Conference, which held yesterday in Victoria Island, Tony Ojobo, the Director of Public Affairs, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), revealed that the Nigerian Telecommunications companies has paid over N9 billion to different Nigerian music artistes as royalty on ring back tones.

Ojobo said the figure above was captured from payments made by MTN and Globacom while Airtel and Etisalat were paying huge sums likewise.

Mr. Ojobo was of the opinion that technology and entertainment were the hope of Nigeria’s future as oil revenue continues to shrink. He cited the above statistics, to drive home his point.

Furthermore, he said the telecommunications sector liberalization, which happened in 2001 prompted massive development both in the telecom and entertainment industries.
