The National Agency for Food Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Jigawa on Monday urged producers of rice to register with the agency and comply with its rules and regulations.
The State’s Coordinator of NAFDAC, Mr. Kunle Olaniran, made the call at the award ceremony for secondary school members of NAFDAC Consumer Safety Club in Dutse.
Olaniran said there were some rice producers in the state that had not registered and warned that henceforth, the agency would not tolerate that.
“Rice producers or manufacturers must ensure their products are of good quality and ensure they are tested and certified by NAFDAC.
“The test will help us to detect the presence of Aflatoxin, which should not be present because it causes cancers if consumed,’’ he said.
The coordinator said that NAFDAC consumer safety club was used as public enlightenment programmes targeting the youths in the society to help to eradicate counterfeit products in the market.
According to him, the club was aimed at informing and educating members toward collaboration with the agency to safeguard the health of the nation.
According to him, the circulation of fake products in Nigeria had posed great challenge to NAFDAC’s regulatory activities and that was what informed the agency to “catch them young”.
