The Obidient Movement has stepped up efforts to mobilise supporters across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections, expressing confidence that its presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), can provide the leadership needed to tackle Nigeria’s economic and governance challenges.
The renewed mobilisation was announced at the “FCT Obidient Movement Engagement Forum Towards 2027,” held in Abuja under the theme, Building Unity, Strengthening Democracy, Shaping the Future.
Speaking at the event, the National Coordinator of the movement, Yunusa Tanko, said the removal of fuel subsidy without adequate measures to cushion its impact had worsened economic hardship for many Nigerians.
According to him, the policy contributed to higher transportation costs, increased production expenses and rising prices of goods and services, while the expected benefits of the subsidy savings had yet to reach ordinary citizens.
Tanko called for greater investment in public transportation, healthcare, education and other essential services, urging leaders to prioritise policies that directly improve citizens’ welfare.
Also speaking, NDC chieftain Peter Ameh attributed Nigeria’s economic and infrastructural challenges to poor governance, corruption and the mismanagement of public resources.
He said the country possessed abundant human and natural resources but required competent and visionary leadership capable of managing them effectively.
Ameh also advocated prudent public spending to strengthen critical sectors, including education, healthcare, infrastructure and security, while encouraging Nigerians, particularly young people, to remain actively involved in the democratic process.
FCT Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Daniel Dumije, said the movement had encouraged greater political participation among young Nigerians and had already begun preparations for the 2027 elections.
He urged supporters to remain peaceful, organised and committed to pursuing political change through democratic means.
Public policy expert Sam Amadi also called on members of the movement to remain united and vigilant, saying sustained citizen participation would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and improve electoral outcomes.
