The much anticipated one-day trip of President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday to Ogoniland, Rivers state for the flag-off of the clean-up of the oil polluted community has been cancelled over security fears.
The president was scheduled to visit the oil-producing state which has been hit by a wave of militant attacks in recent weeks.
The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) had warned the president against visiting any area in the Niger Delta, warning of dire consequences.
The NDA has cut Nigeria’s oil output by over 800, 000 barrels per day over the past few weeks with the latest being its attack on two Cheveron oil fields in Warri, Delta State.
Given the security worry, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who has represented the president at so many of state functions outside Abuja is billed to attend the flag-off.
Not too long ago, the president equally cancelled a trip to Lagos state and was instead represented by the Vice president.
