The Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), yesterday, with the aid of the Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road safety Corps, ransacked and sealed shops in new Panteka market and Katsina road in Kaduna metropolis while confiscating more than 10,000 used and substandard tyres in Kaduna.
SON Acting Zonal Coordinator, Adamu Abba, said the raid was meant to rid the market of products injurious to the health and well-being of Nigerians.
He lamented that the organisation had warned the dealers several times to stop the sale of used and substandard tyres, but had remained adamant.
He said, “This type of business is dangerous to lives of Nigerians and must be checked, you can all bear witness of the number of people who died because of used and substandard tyres.”
Abba reminded the dealers that the ban placed by the Federal Government on importation of the seized products was still in force.
“All those used and substandard tyres were smuggled into the country, they didn’t come through normal process,” he said.
He said that the inspection would continue, adding that violators would be prosecuted and the used, substandard tyres impounded would be destroyed.
The zonal officer said that SON would build synergy with critical stakeholders to stop circulation of substandard products in Nigerian markets.
