Relationships can be wonderful and fulfilling but require efforts and attention to remain healthy and strong. One of the most essential elements in any successful relationship is appreciation. When people feel appreciated, they tend to feel valued and loved.
However, the lack of appreciation can cause considerable damage to a relationship, ultimately leading to a breakdown. When people do not feel appreciated, they feel unimportant, neglected, and unloved. This lack of acknowledgement and gratitude can create resentment, frustration, and disappointment, leading to problems that may eventually lead to the breakdown of the relationship. Likewise in business, when employees are not well appreciated, it can lead to lack of interest and loss of focus that result to delay in task and productivity. The output of the employees most times in such situations is minimal.
Employees respond to appreciation expressed through recognition of their good work because it confirms that their work is valued. When employees and their work are valued, their satisfaction and productivity rise, and they are motivated to maintain or improve their good work. Some may value verbal praise, while others may respond better to tangible rewards. To motivate employees to recognize and appreciate each other, you should provide them with various options and tools to do so, such as peer-to-peer recognition programs, online platforms, gift cards, or recognition events. When you express gratitude and appreciation towards workers, they tend to show positive interpersonal relationships, and mostly it positively impacts team dynamics and communication.
Appreciation is a drive-force that keeps relationships going. Employees want to feel connected to their colleagues and managers, to feel their work has meaning and impact on the company, and to be appreciated for the work they do. Organizations can appreciate their employees through incentives and rewards that boost their psychological needs and job security, conducive environment, mentorship training, skills and career development training, creative rewards that are career-based, annual leave and holidays, employee’s hangout and dinner or any form of social gatherings that will help enhance relationship among employees and help staffs to create memorable moments.
Employee appreciation enhances engagement, productivity, and retention, which are critical for any organization’s success. Genuine appreciation can be shown through creative rewards tailored to everyone’s interests, ensuring each employee feels valued. Encouraging further education and mentoring can show employees that the organization is interested in their career growth. Small, thoughtful gestures, like saying ‘thank you’ or helping with commutes, can make a big difference in employee satisfaction.
Employee appreciation should be an integral part of the company culture as it will help to increase the output and productively of employees and aid employee relationship that will create a conducive workplace environment.

The airline is now inviting applications from seasoned commanders to join its Direct Entry Captains programme for its fleet of Airbus A380s.
Emirates has launched a recruitment drive globally. Interested pilots and their families can join an online info session on 4 October at 1pm Dubai time, attend open days in select destinations, and keep an eye out for exciting opportunities here.
The Direct Entry Captains programme is for technically skilled captains with a minimum of 3,000 hours of recent command on Airbus fly-by-wire wide-body aircraft such as the A330, A340, A350, and A380. Candidates are required to have a minimum of 7,000 hours of total flying time on multi-crew, multi-engine aircraft, in addition to meeting other eligibility criteria.
Life at 35,000ft Emirates’ pilots find flying the airline’s fleet professionally fulfilling, rewarding, and exciting. New joiners will be embraced into a 4,200 strong flight crew community, including 1,515 A380 pilots, who take pride in flying the airline’s overall fleet of 260 aircraft. The airline’s all wide-body fleet is one of the youngest and most advanced in the world, and includes Emirates’ iconic Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s. Emirates will start receiving its fleet of A350s mid-2024 and 777-9s in 2025.
The airline’s pilots also relish the excitement and adventure of flying one of the most comprehensive global route networks that spans six continents. They operate everything from regional routes in the Middle East to ultra-long haul destinations and cross-polar flights which make for varied and interesting rosters.
Lifelong training The airline continues to invest soundly in innovative pilot training, with its current facility housing 10 full-flight simulators. Emirates’ robust, evidence-based in-house training programmes are delivered by highly experienced instructors and feature specially designed operating environments. The airline’s latest US$135 million, high-tech pilot training facility is set to open in March 2024. The 63,300sq.ft. facility will increase pilot training capacity by 54% and house 6 more full-flight simulators, including for the A350s and Boeing 777-9s.
Pilots also have access to a range of non-technical training programmes at the Emirates Aviation College and Emirates Aviation University.

They also enjoy chauffeur-driven transport to and from work, laundry services, 42 days of annual leave, confirmed Business Class annual leave flight tickets, concessional cargo, exceptional discounted travel benefits for friends and family, and much more.

They also enjoy long, fruitful careers as around 40% have been with the airline for 10+ years – 1,380 pilots for 10-19 years, 173 for between 20-29 years, and 5 who have completed 30 years. Fun fact: the two longest serving pilots, with over 34 years of service, joined the airline on the same day in 1989.
In the last five months, the airline has welcomed 172 new pilots on its three recruitment programmes – Direct Entry Captains, Accelerated Command, and First Officers.
Accelerated Command Programme Designed for Airbus Captains who currently command narrow-body aircraft and have a minimum of 1,500 hours of Airbus fly-by-wire experience. In a world saturated with information and stimulation, capturing an audience’s attention has become an art form. In this digital age, where scrolling or swiping can make or break an impression, the value of engaging visual content cannot be overstated.
From social media platforms to corporate presentations, the ability to create images and videos that resonate with viewers is a desirable skill. Here are seven tips to help you master the art of creating engaging visual content that leaves a lasting impact.
**1. Know your audience
Effective visual storytelling starts with understanding your target audience. Whether it’s a product advertisement, educational video, or travel vlog, tailoring your images to your audience’s interests and preferences can significantly increase engagement. Research their demographics, interests, and behaviors to create content directly relevant to them.
**2. Tell a story
Every attractive image or video contains a story. A well-crafted story, even without dialogue, can evoke emotions and create a deeper connection with the viewer. Plan your visuals with a clear beginning, middle, and end, guiding your audience through an engaging and resonant journey.
**3. Focus on ingredients
The rule of thirds, leading lines, symmetry: these composition techniques can turn an ordinary image into a visual masterpiece. Whether you’re shooting a beautiful landscape or showcasing a product, paying attention to the arrangement of elements in the frame can create a harmonious and visually appealing composition.
**4. Color psychology
Color evokes emotions and can set the tone for your visual content. Understanding color psychology can help you convey the right message to your audience. Warm tones like red and orange express energy and passion, while cooler tones like blue and green evoke calm and confidence. Choose colors that match the mood you want to convey.
**5. Quality issues
In a world of high-resolution and Retina displays, image quality is more important than ever. Invest in good equipment, whether it’s a high-resolution camera or professional editing software. Sharp images and videos not only look more appealing, but they also add credibility to your content.
**6. Tell A Story
Video has the advantage of motion, so it can be utilized to great effect. Incorporate motion that enhances your storytelling – from smooth pans to dynamic transitions. But remember that every movement must serve a purpose, directing the viewer’s attention and enhancing the overall experience.
**7. Brief
In today’s fast-paced world, attention spans are decreasing. Whether it’s a 15-second Instagram story or a three-minute promotional video, concise storytelling is essential. Eliminate the unnecessary and focus on conveying your message succinctly, leaving a memorable impact without overwhelming your audience.
In a landscape where visual content is king, mastering the art of creating engaging images and videos can set you apart. By understanding your audience, telling compelling stories, using composition and color effectively, maintaining quality, capitalizing on movement, and practicing uniformity, you can create images that do more than just attract attention but also leave a lasting impression. As technology continues to advance, those who can utilize the power of visual storytelling will stay at the forefront of effective communication.

To decrease fiscal deficits, the International Monetary Fund has recommended Nigeria and other Sub-Saharan African nations to focus on reducing tax breaks and increasing domestic income.
It stated that this was a better method than cutting fiscal spending, which might harm economic progress. This was mentioned by the lender in a report titled ‘How to Avoid a Debt Crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa.’
It said, “Sub-Saharan African countries tend to rely excessively on expenditure cuts to reduce their fiscal deficits. Although this may be warranted in some circumstances, revenue measures, like eliminating tax exemptions or digitalising filing and payment systems, should play a greater role.
“Mobilising domestic revenue is less detrimental to growth in countries where initial tax levels are low, whereas the cost associated with reducing expenditures is particularly high given Africa’s large development needs. While difficult to achieve, large and rapid increases in revenue have been observed in some countries like The Gambia, Rwanda, Senegal, and Uganda, which relied on a mix of revenue administration and tax policy measures.”
The IMF also said that developing countries could boost their Gross Domestic Product by about eight per cent in the next few years if they increased the rate of women participating in the labour force.
IMF said this in a weekly chart posted on Wednesday on its website. It stated that bridging the gap between the number of men and women who worked was one of the very important reforms policymakers could make to revive economies amid the weakest medium-term growth outlook in more than 30 years.
“We estimate that emerging and developing economies could boost gross domestic product by about 8 per cent over the next few years by raising the rate of female labour force participation by 5.9 percentage points—the average amount by which the top 5 per cent of countries reduced the participation gap during 2014-19,” the IMF said.

Food costs in Ebonyi and Abia states increased by 31% in a year, from July 2022 to July 2023. This is according to an examination of the National Bureau of Statistics’ ‘Selected Food Price Watch,’ a monthly publication.
Rice (1kg), beans (1kg), bread (500g), tomatoes, meat, wheat (2kg), garri (1kg), and palm oil (1 bottle) are among the food products chosen. According to sources, the most significant food price increase was reported in the price of yam, which increased by 42% from N389.75 in July 2022 to N539.41 in 2023.
This was quickly followed by an increase in the price of one kilogram of rice, which rose from N467.80 to N653.49 in a year. In the same way, the price of palm oil went up by 35 per cent, from N890.67 to N1208.62 during the period in review.
Other staple foods which contributed to the food price hike included Garri (1kg), which increased by 33 per cent, from N323.17 to N429.89. 500g of sliced bread also increased from N486.27 to N651.78 (+34 per cent).
A kilogram of tomato (N446.81 to N557.96), Wheat (2kg) (N1094.72 to N1419.14), and Beef (N2118.84 to N2758.13), also accounted for some of the staple food items which recorded significant price spikes. Further analysis of the report showed that South-Eastern states, led by Abia and Ebonyi recorded the highest food prices during the twelve-month period.
On the other hand, states within the North Central (Kogi, Niger, Benue) recorded the lowest food prices during this time. In its latest Consumer Price Index, a report which measures inflation, the NBS had said food inflation rate in August, which was 29.34 per cent, was the primary factor which pushed headline inflation from 24.08 in July to 25.80 in August.
The NBS said, “The rise in food inflation on a year-on-year basis was caused by increases in prices of oil and fat, bread and cereals, fish, fruit, meat, vegetables and potatoes, yam and other tubers, vegetable, milk, cheese and eggs.
The Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA) and GE HealthCare have taken a significant step towards improving maternal and fetal outcomes in Nigeria by signing a Strategic Cooperation Agreement (SCA) to equip midwives and nurses with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively use ultrasound machines.
This initiative aims to empower healthcare providers with the tools to deliver better care to expectant mothers and their unborn babies. As part of this collaboration, GE HealthCare has donated eight Vscan ultrasound devices.
These compact, portable devices are well-suited for use in resource-limited settings, where accessing traditional ultrasound machines may be challenging.
The agreement was ceremonially signed by Her Excellency Mrs Toyin Ojora Saraki, Founder & President of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, and Mr Eyong Ebai of GE HealthCare at The Sofitel Hotel on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
In addition to the donation, WBFA and GE HealthCare are conducting comprehensive training for nurses and midwives which will impact over 96,000 mothers this year alone. These training programs in the states of Lagos, Abuja, and Kwara, include theoretical and practical sessions. Participants will receive hands-on training on the use of the Vscan device, covering basic principles of ultrasound technology, image acquisition, interpretation, reporting, and even basic obstetric ultrasound scans.
According to the World Health Organization, the Maternal Mortality Rate in Nigeria in 2017, was estimated at 917 per 100 000 live births; it increased by nearly 14% in 2020 to reach 1047 deaths 2 with evidence suggesting that the increase in rates is due to three common signs of delay: in making the decision to seek maternal healthcare, in locating and arriving at a medical facility, and in receiving skilled pregnancy care when a woman gets to the health facility.
Her Excellency Mrs Toyin Ojora Saraki, Founder & President of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa said “This collaboration between WBFA and GE HealthCare is a significant milestone in our mission to promote the wellbeing of expectant mothers across Nigeria. With the power of ultrasound technology, we can now detect warning signs early, ensuring the health and safety of both mothers and babies. By providing Vscan devices, delivering comprehensive training, and raising awareness within communities, WBFA and GE HealthCare is working towards healthier pregnancies, safer deliveries, and brighter futures for mothers and babies across Nigeria.”
Eyong Ebai General Manager for Sub-Sahara-Africa, GE HealthCare said “We are proud to support the Wellbeing Foundation Africa in their mission to improve maternal and fetal outcomes in Nigeria. This will enable critical healthcare services in remote areas; GE HealthCare’s involvement supports our strategy in Africa to providing healthcare professionals with the latest technology, we are equipping them with the means to detect potential complications early, ultimately saving lives.”
Ukrainian football teams will boycott all competitions including Russian teams, according to their federation, in retaliation to Union of European Football Associations (UEFA’)s re-admission of Russia’s youth team to international competition.
“The UAF confirms that it will not take part in any competitions involving Russian teams,” it said.
Other UEFA members were also encouraged to boycott matches against Russian teams.
In reaction to Moscow’s onslaught in Ukraine, European football’s governing body quickly excluded all Russian teams from competitions last year, but relaxed the suspension on Tuesday by re-admitting Russia’s national under-17 team.
“The Ukrainian Association of Football strongly condemns the decision by UEFA to return U-17 teams from Russia to international competitions,” the UAF said via a statement.
“The UAF confirms that it will not take part in any competitions involving Russian teams,” it said.
UEFA stated in announcing the judgment that a “generation of minors” were being denied the ability to compete, and that children should not be penalised for the misdeeds of adults.
It did, however, state that Russian teams would not be permitted to play on Russian soil, and that the country’s flag, anthem, and national playing uniform would be prohibited.
Ukraine has frequently demanded for Russia to be barred from participating in international sporting events and has vowed to boycott the 2024 Paris Olympics if Russian and Belarusian competitors compete.
Every day is for the Teachers! The moment we start giving preferences to the profession and the people as the most important members of our society, the moment there will be the emergence of true instructors and educators who are ready to instill the requisite knowledge for nation building.
Alas! The society is in quagmire and stagnated in this part of the world. Over the years, least attention has been given to the whole of the educational sector- the citadel of learning.
The Citadel that houses the army of teachers. Today, can it be said to be a great citadel of learning? Can it be said to be a fortified environment that promotes excellence in academics through sound teaching and learning that influences people becoming better and ideal citizens who are able to shape a better society to live in, by knowing and respecting rights, laws, and regulations?
Alas! This must be one of the reasons our nations have been locked to dangerous and usually complex situation which is difficult to exit. We have been embroiled in inextricable complexities amongst civilians during the electioneering processes that come with its reverberating effects in democracy with support of the Judiciary.
This is informed by the monumental corruptions and the lack of interest in the sector caused by bad government policies and lack of political will amongst the ‘elites’ to enforce or implement laws. Hence, the Nigerian educational system is bedeviled with myriad of glitches that has led to near-comatose of the sector in recent years.
The system is faced with problems such as lack of adequate funding, negligence of teachers’ welfare, poor governance, corruption, lack of Infrastructure, indiscipline, lack of teaching aids and outdated curriculum. Though, the entire sector is wracked by endemic corruption, so much so that it has eaten deeply into the fabric of the entire system; the fundamentals must first be addressed.
Alas! The lacuna in the educational sector of our country that happens to be the rudiment impeding the sustainable development meant to intrinsically translate to the nation of ‘my dream’ and ‘your dream’ invariably stems from the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (5th Alteration) (No. 8) ACT, 2023. And it has gone largely unnoticed!
Meanwhile, the ACT created the National Policy on Education (NPE) 2004 and the compulsory, Free Universal Basic Education (UBE) ACT 2004.
The NPE affirmed that education in Nigeria is an instrument ‘par excellence’ for effecting national development. Primarily, amongst its objectives, the NPE is focused on the need for functional education for the promotion of progressive united Nigeria, and to this end; school programmes need to be relevant, practical and comprehensive whilst interest and ability should determine the individual direction in education.
This is expected for the country to spell out in clear and unequivocal terms the philosophy and objectives that underlie its investment in education (for the welfare of Teachers and Students).
However, the Nigerian Constitution provides that it shall be the responsibility of the government to direct its policy towards ensuring that there are equal and adequate educational opportunities at all levels, it shall provide science and technology, it shall strive to eradicate illiteracy, and to this end, government shall, as and when practicable, provide free, compulsory and universal primary education; free secondary education; free university education; and free adult literacy programme.
Consequently, regardless of the prevalence of robust laws and legislative measures towards ensuring the right to education and its role to maintain a great citadel of learning that fosters the worth and development of the citizens for individual’s sake and for the general development of the society, education system in Nigeria is still a chimera.
One could have also believed that Nigeria as a member of the United Nations and a signatory to many international human rights instruments that provide for the right to education and made recommendation to promote teacher’s status in the interest of quality education would have addressed the enigma in the system.
In spite of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) recommendation that developing countries should dedicate 15% to 20% of their annual budget to public education, less than 2% of Nigeria’s GDP only had been committed to education in more than 10 years.
This shows that the national budget for education has remained abysmally poor over the period. This regardless of the fact that half of the money budgeted still ends up being stolen away by corrupt government officials, leaving the sector almost comatose.
UNESCO proclaimed 5 October to be World Teachers’ Day in 1994, celebrating the great step made for teachers on 5 October 1966.
Specifically, I must say that the recommendation has failed to promote teachers’ status in the interest of quality education.
The prevalent violations in the sector, however, revealed that making provision for quality education and welfare of teachers in Nigeria have become anathema amongst successive governments.
With the current health of the country’s citadel of learning, the citadel that houses the army of teachers for the desired nation of our dreams remains elusive, which does not call for celebration of any sort.
No doubt, the narratives of the dream of our nation can be upturn through improved educational system by funding the sector adequately, embracing technology, curriculum reform, putting safeguards in place to stem the tidal wave of massive corruption that has stymied the growth of the sector in recent years.
Most importantly, the legislators should go back to the drawing board to ensure that the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution wholly captures the welfare of our teachers as integral part of the education sector.
To get it right as a nation that values education, teachers’ sacrifices should be treated as blood is to life. I strongly agree with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi who said, “Teaching is not a profession, but a way of life.”
So, how well this important ‘way of life’ is handled determines to the nations of our dreams. If this concept has been in practice over the years, it would have curbed the concerns of this years’ (2023) World Teachers’ Day celebrations, themed, “The Teachers We Need for the Education We Want: The Global Imperative to Reverse the Teacher Shortage.” Unfortunately, what value do we place on teachers in Nigeria?
Alas! Brain drain may hit the country’s educational sector soon, as exodus of teachers from our country looms.
The daily appreciation and celebration by individuals and governments will address the unprecedented teacher shortage and showcase practices to attract, retain, and motivate teachers and educators in Nigeria and other African countries. I am of the opinion, it is high time the yearly 5th October, Teacher’s Day celebration is scrapped.
Permit me to buttress my point further with an extract from an aspiring linguist, Julia S’s narrative, titled, “In Japan, there is no Teacher’s Day”.
“In Japan, a teacher is the most respected profession, the most respected person. Japanese entrepreneurs are delighted when teachers visit their stores; they consider it an honor.
“During my time in Japan, I repeatedly saw how Japanese people deeply respect teachers. There are separate seats for them on the subway, dedicated stores, and teachers don’t wait in line for tickets on any form of transportation.
“Why do Japanese teachers need a separate holiday when every day of their lives is like a celebration?”
I believe that every day is for the Teachers! Because Teachers across the world, work tirelessly daily, often without accolades.
Just like the Japanese cultural belief that provision of quality education has been hallmark of prosperous nation, in our little ways, everyone can help by celebrating the profession, by generating awareness about teacher issues, by ensuring that teacher’s respect and welfare is part of the natural order of things.
Indeed, teachers are the backbone of our democracy – fostering curiosity and creativity, building skillful individuals, and strengthening informed citizens in pursuit of the nation of our dreams.
Let’s take the opportunity each day to reverence the important roles teachers play in our lives because their determination and sincerity will shape the destiny of the nation as they are laying the foundation and the building blocks of the society.
Victor Osimhen’s agent has threatened Napoli with legal action following the publication of a video on the club’s official social media ridiculing the Nigeria striker for missing a penalty in the weekend’s goalless draw against Bologna.
The TikTok post, which was later deleted, showed Osimhen failing to score his spot-kick in the Serie A encounter with a high-pitched voice pleading “gimme penalty please,” eliciting a rage from Roberto Calenda.
“What happened today on Napoli’s official profile on the TikTok platform is not acceptable. A video mocking Victor was first made public and then, but now belatedly, deleted,” Calenda said.
“(It is) A serious fact that causes very serious damage to the player and adds to the treatment that the boy is suffering in the last period between media trials and fake news.
“We reserve the right to take legal action and any useful initiative to protect Victor.”
Osimhen has struggled in the early stages of the season for Napoli, but he has still scored three goals in six games.
After scoring 31 goals in all competitions last season as Napoli won their first league title since 1990, the 24-year-old has become an idol in Naples.
Osimhen, who was a summer target for Chelsea and Manchester United, is now negotiating a contract extension with Napoli, with his current agreement set to expire in June 2025.
Just over three years ago, he was signed by Napoli from Lille for an initial fee of 70 million euros, a trade that is being probed by Italian authorities.
On Tuesday, Italian media claimed that Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is being probed by prosecutors in Rome for allegedly inflating the value of the move, which included the sale of four players to Lille.

The Dotun Adesua Symposium, an earnest endeavor to cultivate meaningful dialogue within Nigeria’s dynamic creative industry, has laid a firm groundwork upon which this vibrant sector can flourish and become a catalyst for national development.
The symposium, held in Lagos, brought together luminaries, industry professionals, and creative minds under the theme, “Nurturing Creative Talent For Nation-Building. “It served as a pivotal platform for driving conversations that are essential to the growth and prosperity of the nation.
At the heart of the symposium was the visionary mission to bridge the gap between established professionals, mentors, and the emerging generation seeking guidance. The symposium aimed to equip these budding talents with invaluable knowledge and insights while fostering stronger connections between industry leaders and the creative pioneers of tomorrow.
In his keynote address, President and Chairman, Governing Council of the National Institute of Marketing Nigeria (NIMN), Mr. Idorenyen Enang set the tone for the symposium illuminating the diversity within the creative industry, with each facet underpinned by creativity at its core.
Using a metaphorical dining table, Enang vividly illustrated how consumers often engage with creative products without fully comprehending the intricate workings of the industry. He emphasized the need for professionals to expand their horizons and deepen their knowledge.
Enang went further to underscore that the journey of nurturing creative talent commences at home, drawing parallels with the farming process. He likened the act of planting seeds to the inception of creativity, asserting that the cultivation of creative talent begins with education.
“Mentorship plays an indispensable role in guiding individuals along their creative journeys, nurturing the sparks of genius within them.” Enang firmly stated.
The symposium also featured a panel session where the President of the Association of Professional Party Planners and Event Managers of Nigeria, Funbi Akinyosoye shared her insights on the pivotal role of education in unlocking creative potential.
Akinyosoye recounted her personal journey, highlighting that formal education alone does not define one’s ability to infuse perfectionism into their work.
She encouraged young individuals to embark on creative explorations, even in seemingly minor endeavors, reinforcing the notion that education provides the platform for them to express themselves more effectively.
Veteran Comedian and Compere, Gbenga Adeyinka the 1st, brought his wealth of experience to the panel.
He shared his experiences in propelling the comedy sector in Nigeria’s southwest region, despite initial skepticism regarding his choice of location for shows.
Adeyinka emphasized his steadfast dedication to nurturing talents, which has played a pivotal role in the remarkable growth of comedy in the region. He dispelled the misconception that creativity is synonymous with chaos and underscored the importance of structure in delivering successful creative projects.
Summing up the symposium’s significance, the Convener Dotun Adesua, declared that the symposium sent a resounding message: Nurturing creative talents is not merely an individual odyssey but a crucial contribution to Nigeria’s cultural and economic development.
Adesua announced that the symposium marked the initiation of an annual tradition, poised to continue inspiring and connecting professionals with emerging talents within the creative industry, adding that subsequent events would propel Nigeria forward through the transformative power of creativity and mentorship, envisioning a brighter future for the nation’s creative landscape.
