Main Story
Nigerian equities shed ₦1.47 trillion on Monday as losses in Dangote Cement and banking stocks dragged the market lower, pushing the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) All-Share Index down 0.91% to 245,278.34.
Market capitalisation fell by ₦1,468.30 billion to ₦159.26 trillion, reflecting broad selling pressure across the exchange. Dangote Cement declined 5.50%, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated fell 4.76%, Zenith Bank lost 1.59%, and Guaranty Trust Holding Company dropped 1.44%.
Despite the decline in market value, trading activity increased. The volume of shares traded rose 35.57%, while transaction value advanced 37.94%. Investors exchanged approximately 349.40 million shares worth ₦18.03 billion in 43,193 deals.
Access Holdings led trading by volume, accounting for 6.75% of shares traded. Livestock Feeds followed with 6.66%, ahead of United Bank for Africa at 6.57%, Honeywell Flour Mills at 6.40% and GTCO at 4.16%.
Aradel Holdings accounted for 21.39% of total transaction value, making it the leading stock by value traded during the session.
Multitrex led the gainers with a 10.00% increase, followed by CMFC at 9.97%, Austin Laz at 9.93%, Thomas Wyatt at 9.92%, Neimeth at 5.88% and African Alliance Insurance Company at 2.42%, alongside nine other advancing stocks.
On the losing side, Vitafoam Nigeria fell 10.00%, followed by Cutix at 9.79%, Omatek Ventures at 9.38%, International Energy Insurance at 6.48%, Linkage Assurance at 6.29% and Guinea Insurance at 6.25%.
All five major sector indices declined. Industrial goods fell 2.90%, banking lost 1.40%, insurance dropped 0.89%, consumer goods declined 0.16%, and oil and gas slipped 0.06%.
What’s Being Said
The supplied market report attributes the decline to losses in Dangote Cement and banking stocks, alongside broadly negative sentiment. However, it contains no direct statement from the NGX, the affected companies or an independent market analyst explaining the sell-off.
The reported figures show that increased trading activity did not prevent a decline in market value, while the 40 declining stocks significantly outnumbered the 15 gainers.
What’s Next
- Investors will monitor the next NGX trading session to assess whether selling pressure continues, particularly in industrial goods and banking stocks.
- Subsequent market data will show whether the All-Share Index, market capitalisation and market breadth recover or extend their declines.
Bottom Line
The Bottom Line: The session combined heavier trading activity with falling prices, indicating that increased turnover did not translate into broad-based buying support. The concentration of losses across all five sectors and the wide gap between decliners and gainers point to weak market breadth, although one session alone does not establish a sustained downward trend.
