Minister Condemns Poor Access To Clean Water

The minister of water resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu, has condemned poor access to clean water, regretting that only a paltry 23 per cent of the populace has access to safe water.

The minister stated this during the Children Safe Drinking Water 10billionth Liter Celebration, an initiative of Procter and Gamble in Abuja.

Adamu, who was represented by Mr Awe Emmanuel, who is director of water quality control and sanitation in the ministry, noted that government has embarked on a number of initiatives including water treatment and storage, to ensure access to safe water in the country.

While lauding the intervention of P&G in the effort of government make safe water accessible to the populace across the nooks and crannies of the country, he enjoined the company to also place emphasis on hygiene in its campaign.

The associate director for Global Government Relations P&G Sub Sahara Africa, Temitope Iluyemi, noted that “access to clean water is still one of the greatest challenges our world is still facing.”

According to him, nearly 1,000 children die everyday from diseases caused by drinking unsafe water.
