Lagos Flags Off Water Transportation Master Plan

The Lagos State Government has flagged off a comprehensive water transportation master plan in which 30 routes have been identified across the state for channelisation, dredging, lighting and demarcation for water transportation.

The state government debunked allegations by some private operators on the state waterways that it adopted a ploy to harass and intimidate them out of business, describing the claims as unwarranted falsehood.

The Managing Director of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Ms. Abisola Kamson stated that the master plan for water transportation had been concluded.

Kamson explained some painstaking efforts, which she said, the administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had taken to modernise and move water transportation forward.

She revealed that the state government “has concluded a master plan. It has equally identified 30 routes across the state which have been earmarked for channelization, dredging, lighting and demarcation specifically for water transportation.”The MD listed the water transportation routes to include Badore – Five Cowries, Badore – Ijede, Baiyeku – Ajah, Baiyeku – Langbasa, Ebute Ojo – Marina, Ijede – Marina/CMS, Ikorodu – Falomo, Mile 2 To Marina, Oworonsoki – Five Cowries, Ikorodu – Oworonshoki, Marina – CMS, Oworonshoki to Ebute Ero among others.

She further added that the routes “have been earmarked for channelization, dredging, lighting and demarcation specifically for water transportation. The jetties in the state also require upgrade, modernisation and addition of new constriction. The only solution is for government to be proactive in this direction.”
