By Boluwatife Oshadiya| October 21, 2026

Key Points

  • INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan says the commission is on track to deliver free, fair and credible 2027 general elections
  • The commission says non-sensitive election materials have been distributed, while contracts for sensitive materials are advancing
  • INEC is upgrading logistics, information technology, security and staff training ahead of the elections

Main Story

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is on track with preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with non-sensitive materials distributed and further work underway on logistics, technology, security and personnel training.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), disclosed this during a readiness assessment session with commission staff in the South-East in Enugu on October 19, 2026, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Amupitan said the commission was following a preparation timeline and checklist, with contracts for sensitive election materials progressing. He also said INEC was acquiring additional vehicles to improve the movement of personnel and materials.

“We are on track and moving ahead with most of the checklist,” Amupitan said.

The chairman said extensive training and retraining had commenced, particularly on new guidelines and regulations introduced under the amended Electoral Act. He added that the commission’s information and communications technology infrastructure had been upgraded and security strengthened.

According to Amupitan, INEC had also established committees involving government agencies, commissions and other organisations to provide specialised support for the elections.

Earlier, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Enugu State, Dr Chukwuemeka Chukwu, outlined the state’s electoral structure: 17 local government areas, 260 registration areas and 4,145 polling units.

Chukwu said effective election management across the state would require coordinated personnel deployment, logistics, technology, infrastructure, security and sustained engagement with stakeholders at the grassroots.

Representatives from Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states also presented assessments of their respective levels of preparedness and the challenges they face ahead of the 2027 elections.

What’s Being Said

“The commission is getting more vehicular logistics for seamless movement of personnel and materials,” said Joash Amupitan, INEC chairman.

Chukwuemeka Chukwu, INEC’s resident electoral commissioner in Enugu State, said the commission’s preparedness at local government, registration area and polling unit levels must be coordinated with zonal and national planning.

Independent response: The NAN report supplied does not include comments from opposition parties, election observers or civil society groups independently assessing INEC’s readiness.

What’s Next

  • INEC is expected to continue preparations involving sensitive election materials, staff training, transport logistics and security arrangements.
  • The readiness challenges identified by representatives of the five South-East states will be relevant to monitoring implementation at state and grassroots levels.
  • Further assessments will be needed to establish whether the commission’s stated preparations translate into operational readiness before the 2027 elections.

The Bottom Line

The Bottom Line: INEC’s readiness assessment outlines progress in materials distribution, training, technology and logistics, but an official declaration of preparedness is not, by itself, proof that every operational challenge has been resolved. The commission’s ability to coordinate resources and execute its plans across polling units will be central to delivering credible elections in 2027.
