MAIN STORY
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has stepped up vigilance across airport operations following the confirmation of an Ebola Virus Disease case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
In a statement issued on Tuesday evening in Lagos, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, said the authority was working with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Port Health Services, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and other relevant agencies to support containment efforts.
Agbebire said the early identification of the case and the commencement of contact tracing underscored the importance of established public health protocols and cooperation among relevant agencies.
He added that FAAN would continue to coordinate with public health authorities, follow further guidance and support additional measures considered necessary to protect passengers, airport personnel and the wider public.
The authority urged passengers, airlines, airport users and other stakeholders to remain calm, stay vigilant and cooperate with health officials.
FAAN also advised the public to rely on verified information and avoid circulating unconfirmed reports as authorities continue their response.
THE ISSUES
The confirmation of an Ebola case places renewed emphasis on public health preparedness at transport hubs, where coordination among airport operators and health agencies is important for identifying potential risks and implementing appropriate response measures.
For the aviation sector, clear communication and adherence to official health guidance are essential to protecting passengers and airport workers while maintaining safe airport operations.
However, FAAN’s statement did not specify whether additional screening procedures or other new airport restrictions had been introduced.
WHAT’S NEXT
FAAN said it would continue working with public health authorities and align its response with further guidance. Passengers and other airport users should follow official instructions issued by the relevant health and aviation agencies.
BOTTOM LINE
FAAN’s response centres on heightened vigilance and coordination with public health authorities following the reported Ebola case in Abuja. Further measures will depend on guidance from the agencies responsible for managing the public health response.
