MAIN STORY

The Federal Government has disbursed ₦38.93 billion to 166 public tertiary institutions across Nigeria to address infrastructure gaps and improve teaching and learning facilities.

The disbursement was made under the Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund and covers 79 universities, 46 polytechnics and 41 colleges of education.

Efe Ovuakporie, Head of Media at the Federal Ministry of Finance, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja.

According to Ovuakporie, universities received ₦28.5 billion, while polytechnics received ₦5.8 billion and colleges of education were allocated ₦4.7 billion.

She said the intervention was also intended to support the implementation of measures agreed upon by the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities under their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The funds are expected to enable beneficiary institutions to begin or continue approved projects addressing critical infrastructure shortages and other identified needs.

Ovuakporie stressed that effective coordination among relevant government agencies and the institutions would be necessary to ensure the money delivers practical improvements to educational facilities.

THE ISSUES

The funding addresses infrastructure needs across different categories of public tertiary institutions, where shortages of adequate facilities can affect students’ learning conditions and staff effectiveness.

However, releasing funds does not automatically translate into better classrooms, laboratories, workshops, libraries or other facilities. The outcome will depend on how institutions deploy the money, the projects completed and whether the spending addresses their most pressing needs.

The distribution also shows that universities received the largest share of the funding, at ₦28.5 billion. Polytechnics and colleges of education received ₦5.8 billion and ₦4.7 billion respectively. The statement did not provide a breakdown of allocations to individual institutions or the specific projects each institution would undertake.

WHAT’S BEING SAID

  • “Effective coordination among relevant agencies and beneficiary institutions was essential to ensuring that the funds translated into tangible improvements in educational infrastructure.” – Efe Ovuakporie, Head of Media, Federal Ministry of Finance.

WHAT’S NEXT

Beneficiary institutions are expected to commence or continue projects approved under the intervention. Relevant government agencies and institutional authorities will need to coordinate the implementation of those projects.

The extent to which the funding improves teaching and learning conditions will become clearer as projects progress and facilities are delivered. The statement did not specify completion deadlines or provide institution-by-institution project details.

BOTTOM LINE

The Federal Government has released ₦38.93 billion to 166 public tertiary institutions for infrastructure improvements and to support agreed measures with ASUU. The key test will be whether the funding produces completed projects and better facilities for students and staff.
