The Leader of the separatist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been detained.

Malami said that IPOB’s leader was taken extradited to Nigeria on Sunday by the Nigerian Government to face a litany of charges.

Listing the charges, the minister said that the government arrested Nnamdi Kanu on charges bordering on treasonable felony, unlawful possession of firearms, terrorism, and overseeing and unlawful society, according to NAN.
Nnamdi Kanu has remained a controversial figure, pushing for an independent Biafra, comprising of states in the Southeastern part of Nigeria, through referendum.
Nnamdi Kanu’s Arrest and Disappearance
In 2015, Kanu was arrested and detained for over a year on treason charges, despite courts’ orders granting him bail.
His release was effected on 28 April 2017 by Justice Binta Nyako on the grounds of illness, however, not without its controversies.
Months after his release, Kanu maintained a low profile, seemingly vanishing from public view, after his home was raided by officers of the Nigerian Army; leading to speculations regarding his whereabouts.
A year later, he resurfaced in photos that showed that he was in Israel.
His movement, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) had declared a planned boycotting of the 2019 presidential election, one he described as “a multi-faceted approach”, adding that “it is civil disobedience, passive resistance, it is an expression of our resentment of Nigeria and what it represents”.
