MAIN STORY
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and China’s National Immigration Administration have agreed to strengthen cooperation on migration management, border security and intelligence sharing.
The agreement followed a bilateral meeting between the Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, and officials of China’s National Immigration Administration in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Sub Forum on Migration Management Cooperation, which took place from Sept. 8 to Sept. 11.
The international forum attracted more than 2,000 participants from 139 countries and organisations to discuss international cooperation on migration management and responses to emerging transnational challenges.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by NIS Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, the bilateral discussions examined areas of mutual interest and opportunities for closer institutional cooperation.
The proposed areas include technical exchanges, information sharing and capacity building, with both services recognising the need for coordinated responses to migration related security threats.
The NIS also used the engagement to present Nigeria’s experience in tackling document fraud and falsification of records.
The Service highlighted measures being implemented to improve document verification and strengthen border security.
Nandap reaffirmed the NIS commitment to expanding international partnerships, intelligence sharing and technical cooperation as part of efforts to improve border security and migration management.
Akinlabi said Nigeria’s participation in the forum also provided an opportunity for the country to share its experience and learn from other participating countries about emerging approaches to migration management, document security and border control.
The NIS contributed to a roundtable discussion focused on Nigeria’s role in combating document fraud and falsification of records.
